NE Kit Headgasket fitment
« on: April 18, 2015, 09:48:28 AM »
About to put the new head gasket on my '79 CB650. Top end kit provided two o-rings that are close but they seem to a little small for comfort. I know o-rings swell up but do these look the right size?

Did you check the microfiche for what size is called for in that recess?

Thanks I'll go measure it, the old ones are supple and not cracked so I'm considering reusing them but let me see first.

Edit: Measuring it again the new o ring appears to be OD 9mm/ID 5mm/ Thick 2 mm and the old one is OD 10mm/ ID 5mm/ thick 2.5mm.

O-ring on the left is the old one. I'm not sure I'm measuring these rights but here is a visual difference. Suggestions? I'd really like to get this back together for tonight.

I decided to use the old o-rings since the new ones weren't the right size but now I've ran into an issue with the head gasket, the bolt holes cut out don't seem to be spaced correctly as the gasket on the dowels is pushing my o-ring out of it's recess. I'm starting to doubt the quality of this top end kit. It's an NE kit from david silver spares. What a bummer, doesn't look like I'll be riding tonight. Anyone use this kit before?

Can you flip the head gasket around? I think I see cutouts on the gasket that need to be on the other end. Where the cam chain guide goes.

Maybe I'm wrong though.

Also, maybe someone else can chime in about the orings. Id hate to have you rush to put this together only to have it leak. Better to play it same in my opinion.

I thought the same thing at first but realized something was wrong when the holes for the dowels were on the opposite side so I checked a picture of when I took off the head and I'm positive it goes this way, don't ask me why.
