What interchanges from cb500 to cb550 on trans?
« on: October 24, 2014, 03:02:21 PM »
I am considering putting a cb550 trans/lower end on my 500. The top end is good and has good compression, I have the pesky clutch issues. I found one recently but it has some parts missing. The 550 trans has a piston, sprocket cover, stator, points plate, and starter missing. Will these parts from my 500 trans fit/work on the 550?

the 500 sprocket cover will work on the 550 but not visa versa, all those other parts you listed are the same except the piston, your using your 500 top end on the 550 lower?the barrel spigots will be floating clear of the case, the alignment dowels will be doing all the work as to keeping it all square, its been done before ok,ive never done it though, youll also need the 550 clutch cable they have a different free length and the rear right hand engine mount from the 550,this holds the cable lower end.

its the sort of extention part of the sleeve that goes into the case openings, putting a 550 top end onto a 500 you have to have them machined bigger,on visa versa the sleeves are smaller.

just out of interest you can run xl125 pistons in 500s,make use of a hotter cam with more compression ratio, watch they don't foul on the combustion chamber though.

had this head machined to clear the edges a little more.

Got ya. So can one put the 500 head on the 550 lower end without any type mod or will I have to do some type trimming?
Thanks

the heads are both the same for 500 and 550,the 550 has a bigger bore, they have the same crankshaft.
