What's under the seat of a 1971 cb500 four?
« on: November 02, 2014, 01:25:18 PM »
Hi guys. Love the site. I've been researching like mad the past few weeks. I picked up a nice 1971 cb500 that's running well. It's missing a few things and I have been slowly locating them. I just picked up a tray at at a salvage yard that fits in the gaping hole under my seat... but it looks like it has a hole that a filter or something should fit in. Which is strange because I just replaced the air filters and they are obviously under this tray and look nothing like that hole. Is it for a tool kit or something?

I promise that my searches have only turned up relocating electronics under the seat and customized photos. I'm just looking for what it should look like stock, so I can piece it together. Thanks so much. From what I can tell a manual and a toolkit should fit under there. Just not sure how. Also, I don't have the seat lock and would love to throw one of those on. Anyone have a photo of that too?

Basically, a photo of a 1971 cb500 with the seat up would be amazing :) Google and youtube have produced nothing but walk arounds with the seats down :) :)

Thanks!!

Welcome to this madhouse. Best place for you to find out is here: http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb500
You'll find in the Parts Lists precisely what you're looking for. Basically the CB500 airfilter/tooltray arrangement came in two options. The CB500 for USA and other markets had some sort of a screen that fit in that 'hole' to keep nuts and bolts out, some European markets had an airduct on top of the case of the airfilter and its snorkle protruded in forsaid hole. I have one source that says the airduct was about German demands on airintake noise but that is unconfirmed. In the Parts List you'll find it in detail.

Yes, wow! That's perfect thank you. And Dhall, that picture is exactly what I couldn't find. Thanks so much. I'm curious as to what that screen is for... it just goes into a big hole there on mine. The air filters are near it, but....

Anyhow. I'll find it :)

Big hole on the tool tray is what the air goes into air box.  Screen is to prevent bigger stuffs falling down.

I think you should post some pics of your bike and let us help you determine what you have and not have.

Methinks Spider here is running pods - note the plurality of filters...

Search 'airbox' and you will find a lot of info. Sohron has an excellent pictorial on stock airbox setup.
