A couple of wiring questions
« on: October 27, 2014, 06:48:26 AM »
I'm building a CB550 from spare parts; the Sweep The Floor bike #2. I have a wiring harness and controls, but not from the same bike. So far, just about everything has plugged right up.

On the LH control, I have a couple of questions. The BLUE wire and WHITE wire go to the headlight. I know they come from the Hi-Lo switch. I'm using a Suzuki dirtbike headlight. I'll figure out which wire on the headlight is ground, hi and lo beam, but how do I hook up the wires from the controls? They don't go to the main wiring harness, do they? Should they go directly to the headlight?

Also, there's one unidentified wire. It's black with a yellow stripe. I can't find it on the wiring diagrams I have. I DO see a clutch safety switch on my diagrams, but it's a different color. Any idea what the black/yellow wire is?

 The LH control I'm using

Next, I plan on using a combination regulator/rectifier. I'll be placing the electronics in a tray under the seat, like this:

 My tray

 Inspiration

Can you tell me how to order the correct reg/rec combo for a CB550?
Also, the wires from the stator go the electronics "junction box" or panel on the LH side of a stock CB550. From there, that one connector splits to the regulator, rectifier, fuse panel, etc.
If I'm not using that panel, how do I plug everything in? I can find a connector on the main harness for a fuse panel, but can someone give an electrical dummy (ME!) some simple explanations of wiring up a simplified tray? Also go over running the wires to/from the starter solenoid, please.

OK, if it IS the side stand switch and I don't have one, I can just leave it unplugged?

And you basically just throw away the electronics panel that goes under the LH side cover and connect the reg/rec to the stator wiring?

Depending on which model the headlight control came from, its wire bundle either terminates inside the headlight bucket or a junction box under the left side of the gas tank on the frame.

 Here's my question:

The connector on the top is coming from my stator/alternator. It also includes the oil pressure sender wire and the neutral switch wire. It connects to the panel and the panel splits it to other plaxes.

If I get a 6 pin combo regulator/rectifier, how do I hook it up? Do I need to take the small "harness" that's on the side panel and connect it to the main harness so I can use a combo reg/rec?

I plan on ditching the side panel. I'm just not picking up how to make the harness connections for without the small section of wiring.
Maybe I'll go ahead and order the regulator and it'll be more evident, but that still doesn't explain how I hook up the fuse box.

On Honda switches I've seen that had a black/yellow and it was headlight power(cb400f). It came out of the starter switch. So on your LH switch it's power for the headlight switch which is then out through blue or white.

Hmm.....but I can find a black/yellow IN to the LH switch.  But again.....the switch and the harness didn't come from the same bike. Let me look at the diagrams again. Maybe the power IN to the switch is a different color on my harness? And it just so happens I have a color wiring diagram for a CB400F out in the garage, too. I'll cross-check. Thanks!
