Cylindrical Oil Coolers (Wimmer Style)
« on: February 09, 2014, 07:12:13 AM »
Wimmer's http://www.wimmermachine.com/_html/22.html

Pro-One

Due to mounting limitations of running my steering damper and the gixxer frontend, I'm not going to be able to run a traditional, flat, Lockhart style, cooler. I'm going to try one of the bad boys listed above.

I'd really like to go with the wimmer since it's cheaper, but it appears to have 1/8" NPT inlet and outlets. Is this a concern? I know folks have said in the past that bungs this size are unacceptable for oil tanks.

The Wimmer actually says it has 1/8NPT threaded holes. That's too small in my opinion. Maybe Harley's are different and the filter is in a bypass flow?

You may be able to put bigger fittings in or drill the existing out.. Could try to contact Wimmer and ask about that

Would it make sense, if the internal passages are no bigger than 1/8"? How would it be any different than 1/8" passages in the motor?

With the cooler in the return line to the tank, it's coming from the scavenge pump section of the oil pump. I don't know the capability of this pump section, but it would normally have very little back pressure since it pumps into a short open line to the oil tank - and a fairly large diameter oil line at that. I don't know that putting in a restrictive cooler would cause a problem.
The problem would be serious - potential engine destruction - if the scavenge volume was reduced to below the main pump volume. The oil tank would run dry (sump filling up as well) and lubricating flow would drop to whatever the scavenge flow was: likely not enough to maintain pressure for proper main bearing lubrication.
This may or may not be an issue depending on your scavenge pump and just how restrictive the cooler and plumbing is. Try it and let us know how it works out?

I think I shall go with the pro one. I don't really want to invest in something quite so expensive, then leave it as a reminder, next to my pooched engine ;)
