I don't mind the finned alternator and points cover, but the finned valve adjuster covers just don't work for me.

I know your plan is a restoration down the road, but I am thinking leave it be indefinitely. It's a perfect commuter/errand runner, urban camo bike that no body will mess with, and if some schmuck knocks it over with their car trying to park you won't be too broken up over it.

Ha - you would not want them. The left one is missing fins at the bottom (you can see the breaks in the photo) and both covers are flaking chrome plate everywhere. When I do take them off you are welcome to them without a need to exchange!

Today I solved my short problem and got every single electrical thing working - except for the front brake switch. I need to test the actual pressure switch to make sure it is working.

The flaking chrome doesn't scare me too much. I've got my own powder oven and blast cabinet.  I might try my hand at TIG welding those fins to fill them back in. PM me when you're ready to get rid of them.

If the pressure switch has failed the cheapest replacement I've found are switched banjo bolts.

My Lossa muffler arrived today, so it is time to get the bike running and get a pipe made up so this fits to the headers.



I have found that my home stitched seat is already failing, so whilst I might get the bike on the road with this seat, I plan to make the cafe seat pan as soon as possible. I am using a CB175 tank as the cafe cowl, it resembles the CB500 tank and will allow me to have a raw steel look on the seat pan.

4200 kroner. 600$.it is some money..but stainles steel kosts..alternative are a pipemarster 6 in 6...uncel can you valk over and hear apreis for a 1978 cbx preis..my english are not that cool ..to make a prober e mail...

Happy days.

The bike started today and is running okay. It sounds harsh on headers only and won't idle yet but I will dial it in once the muffler is fitted.

All I need to do now is get my front brake switch working.

I have every single electrical thingy now working.

I am getting the muffler fitted Thursday.

I am getting the bike inspected Saturday for a club permit here in Victoria.

And last night - I picked up a full set of Tarrozi rear sets with all the right CB500/4 linkages from a guy who bought them for his CB750 and decided not to use them.

What a great week it has been - and it is only Wednesday.

I picked it up from the exhaust shop this morning, got it inspected for club permit road use, then took it back to the factory and fitted Tarrozi rear sets. I took it up and down the street a few times, adjusted the idle and the rear brake - and I will be riding it next week.

The throttle is sticky though - still running old cables. It does not return as smooth as I would like. Any ideas folks? Should I just go buy new cables or can I lube something up?

So with the 500/4 done I should be back working on the CB450 race bike ...

Nup.

I decided to start the next seat for the 500/4.





Next step is the seat pan, then some riveting, then some upholstering. I want a raw steel look to match the tank.

Given I am now on rear sets and now making a cafe seat, I may end up fitting the clubmans ...

Slight problem...

I went out for a quick ride tonight and the bike started to die on me.

I limped it back to my workshop where it died and would not start for a good ten minutes.

I also flooded the carbs.

When I got it started, it will only run on full throttle - any less and it just dies.

So folks - any idea where I need to be looking for this problem - do I have a blocked jet, or an air leak, I don't know where to begin actually.

First off, check your fuel flow. Disconnect the lines from your carbs, put them in a jar and turn on the petcock.
What do the plugs look like?

Thanks Steve,

Given that the tank was bone dry when I filled it with fuel, it could have had a few flakes of rust come off.

I will check petcock fuel flow, might try to get some clear fuel line too.

And I honestly have not had the plugs out since I bought it - forgot about them. My plug wrenches don't fit so I need to get a long skinny one.

An 18mm deep socket will take the plugs out as well. No need to buy a special plug wrench.

Talking to Terry - I think I will also be taking the carbs off and cleaning the idle jets this weekend.

My thing is - I know once I have the carbs off I will not be able to resist doing a complete strip down and rebuild on all four, which would put me off the
road for a month.

So I will try to resist the temptation to strip ...

By the way ...

Can anyone tell me what size 'O' ring is used in the float bowls? I have an excellent 'O' ring supplier in the same street as my workshop so I can get new ones on Saturday if I know the size.

Bugger.

So today I pulled the carbies off, cleaned the bowls, cleaned the slow jets and got it all back together by lunchtime.



Started the bike, adjusted the idle and got it sitting there just purring away.

Then it died.

And then it would not start unless it had full throttle and was roaring - any less and it just dies.

So - I will check fuel flow (again) even though both petcock lines were running freely  when I drained the tank.

I will pull the plugs and pop in new ones - other than that I think it is time to send it off to the professionals.

Yep - checked float valves, all swinging freely and all at 22mm.

I am going to change my fuel lines, I am using 1/4" ID vacuum hose and that my be restricting the flow. I have some clear line coming
