I'm having this exact problem and have been thinking it's clutch related, because if I put my clutch springs in and tighten them, my engine locks just like you described when turned backwards. If I loosen the clutch springs, it turns backwards normally.

BUT... I never suspected the kickstart mechanism! You clearly had clutch assembled and tightened. So you just flipped the gear thingy (ratchet) that goes to kickstarter shaft 180 degrees? Which way the portruding part should be pointing when the kickstarter assembly is all assembled: https://images.cmsnl.com/img/products/28221310020-ratchetkick_big28221310010-01_5a45.jpg ?

That is exactly the right piece.  Its been awhile but if I remember correctly that piece has a rectangular hole allowing it to go on the shaft at 0 or 180 degrees.  I put mine on 180d off and it resulted in the teeth of the kick start always being engaged, as opposed to only being engaged on the down stroke.... or something like that.

I dont recall the direction, but it was pretty obviously wrong once I tried to figure out how the kickstarter as supposed to work.
