Cb550 sprocket chain conversion options
« on: April 21, 2017, 10:44:35 AM »
Hi All,

I need to change my sprockets and after reading some old posts I'd like to see what others have done.  I know you can mill and mod the stock front to accept a 530 but I too lazy to do that, i'd rather buy a ready made kit.

I want to use an o-ring chain and understand the usual troubles with rubbing of the crankcase.

I've only found a few options online for conversion kits and those are:

- Stay with 530

http://www.moto-madness.com/Honda-CB550-JT-Sprockets-530-ChainKit-17-37.html

- Change to 520
cognito moto has a front and rear sprocket for 520 conversion and i can get the chain at cost due to my membership at my motorcycle workshop.
aluminum rear - https://cognitomoto.com/products/aluminum-rear-sprocket-for-cb550-520-chain
front - https://cognitomoto.com/products/17-tooth-sprocket-520-chain-for-cb750-cb550-cb500t-1

cost will be about the same if i go either way, ~ 150ish

anybody have any other conversion ideas i can go with?

thanks in advance

Sprocket specialties can do 520 sprockets for you.  They are great

Call them.  They probably have sprockets in stock that fit.  They just belong to other models.

I was on dotheton searching reading up on what they do over there.  I read that Moto Madness sources their sprockets from Sprocket Special.

Cognito sells the set for 147 w/o shipping.  I just talked to Lance from Sprockets and ordered a 520 conversion 17t/37t for about 100 shipped priority mail, should be here next wed.  Once installation is complete I'll update my build page.

I blew a reg/rect last Oct and ended up rebuilding the front end, changed exhaust from 4into4 to a kerker 4into1, rebuilt carbs and a slew of other things haha.  Can't wait to get riding agains as the weather in the SF area finally warming up.

now I need to find a 520 chain :)

I am thinking of doing this same conversion prior to the 1300 mile ride to Colorado in August.

I just want to note that Cognito's rear sprocket is made out of aluminum for those that care
