Sam,

She's a looker!! The paint turned out fantastic.  I'm looking forward to coming down to SD next weekend!

Thanks Don!  I'm really happy that I decided to go with the black forks.  Everything flows very nicely.  I'll send you my # and address later this week.

time to ditch the motor lift and swap to a swing arm jack! bodywork looks killer, Sam!

Thanks Cal,

Yeah I know.  I'm trying to hold on to my lift as long as possible.  It makes moving my bike around in the garage so much easier.

Hey Sam - I was chatting with Don last night, and neither he nor I could recall whether you had checked for any interference with your valves and pistons. I just re-read several pages of the motor assembly, and did not see where you mentioned it. I ask because of the O/S valves and lager cam. Do you know for certain whether the pistons do clear without machining reliefs with that head/valve/cam combination? If not, you really need to verify this before you start the motor.

I assume someone from CycleX or Mike would have mentioned this if it were a known issue, but given how much $ and tie you've invested, I'd make double-triple sure you're in the clear before cranking the motor.

Fingers crossed for you!

Cal,

Thanks for the note.  When I read it I had an "oh sh#t!" moment.  I remember when Ken from CycleX called me about my engine work.  He mentioned a few things that I should check, but valve to piston clearance wasn't one of them.  I didn't see any clearance issues when I was installing my head.  So I just got off the phone with Ken just to double check.  He told me that I wouldn't have to work about it with the pistons and gasket that I have.  He said that if I had went with another type, than we would be having a totally different conversation.

Time for another update.  I ran into a problem with my reusable oil filter.  After hooking up all of my hoses, I filled the oil tank with oil and started to cycle the motor with the starter.  Oil started seeping out of the oil filter.  The oil filter is actually a little smaller than the size that I need for Cycle X’s adapter and it wouldn’t seal.  So I used the other oil filter that I had already had.  Problem solved!  Don was a big help and gave me the part number for an alternative.

After turning over the engine a little longer, the oil light went out, and the pressure was solid!

I installed my new Pingel fuel petcock.  I am happy that I chose to modify my gas tank.  Now I have different options if I decide to go another route in the future.

Here are some pictures of my velocity stacks installed.

Last night I took my first shot at wrapping my exhaust.  It was a pain in the butt, but I am happy with the results.  Today when I got home from work, I had to spray them with black silicone to seal them.

My exhaust are Mac 4 into 2 and the tips are Dime City Cycles shorty 12” reverse cone mufflers.

I hope to crank it in the next couple of days and take it to the DMV to get it registered.

Stay tuned for updates!

Woohoo!

Sam, you might want to fashion some stretch covers for your stacks for when the bike is not being used. Just to keep moisture, bugs and dust out.

Looking great!

Today is a great day!  I got home and tinkered around with my bike for awhile.  I finished programing my speedo, installed my exhaust and put about 2 gallons of gas in her.  I pulled out the choke and she fired right up!  I can’t believe that she actually runs!  Since this was just my first run, I didn’t give it any throttle.  I just let the break-in oil run through the engine and let the camshaft break in.

The idle is a little rough.  I still have to go back in and do a few things to her.  When I was running my electrical wiring, I made the headlight wire too short and it pull out of the socket when you turn the bars full lock.  No big deal, I’ll solder in an extension tomorrow.  I need to change the oil and filter, crank her up and go for a her break-in ride.  Oh yeah, I need to fix my exhaust bracket on the right side.  For some reason, it stripped and I am going to have to cut it off and put a new one on.  Being in a hurry, I put it on a different way than my mock up and it messed up the bolt.  So I can’t tighten it down all the way.  I’ll fix that tomorrow as well.

I also need to work on the electronic ignition.  I think that it is off; well I know that it is off.  I don’t think that I installed it right for the 1-4 cycle.  The 2-3 cycle is good.  I just didn’t move the magnets far enough.  Finally I need to adjust the idle.  It idled pretty rough during the first few minutes and then it smoothed out a little.

Here are a few pictures and a quick video.  I’ll take better pictures later!

Video of start up

Now that the hard part is over, it’s time to move on to the tuning!

Thank Jerry!  Yes it does feel amazing.  I'm still in shock that it is actually running.  The build took way longer than I thought that it would and I was starting to think that it was never going to happen.

Nice work, it looks the business!

What a hell of a bike! That engine is going to create some power and torque.

Time to break it in!

Today, I had the pleasure of meeting Sam and seeing his beautiful CB750F.  What a cool guy and an amazing build.

This bike is so meticulously designed and put together for the purpose of performance.

The frame has cross-bracing between the downtubes and tubes behind-below the carburetors.  The stock used and clean welds make it look like it came from the factory that way.

The engine, oh the engine.  A beast of a 915 with Carrillo rods, ported head, and performance cam -- topped off with RS34 carburetors and GIGANTIC Steel Dragon velocity stacks.  This thing reminds me of the level of detail executed by Doctor D and Tweakin.  You just know it is going to pull like a freight train.

The suspension is fully squared away.  It is equipped with the latest generation GSXR750 Big Piston Fork resprung for the weight of THIS bike, with Brembo monoblock calipers, and Cognito front hub and triple tree.  The rear brake features a custom carrier with Brembo caliper off a Ducati Monster.  Sam also came up with a trick mount for his trick combination anolog tachometer and inserted Motogadget miniscope.  The gauge is fully rebuilt with Joker trimmings.

And then there's the wiring.  All Motogadget: M-Unit, M-Lock, switches.  It is so clean and tucked under the seat with a Li-Ion Anti-Grav battery.  The M-Lock RFID has a hidden gusset that points the wireless key under the seat to activate and lock the electronic system.

Sam is still sorting through some shake-down/brake-in issues (requiring some minor tig welding on the oil tank fitting), but should have this baby sorted in short order.  Although the Benji tank is pretty, the QC (quality control) could have been higher.

This bike is built to handle, and go/stop quickly.  Sam's daily rider is a Ducati 1198 with no chicken -strips on the tires.

I'm looking forward to coming back down to SD with one of my bikes and trying to keep up with him.

Kudos, Sam!!  It was great meeting you.

Don,

It was a pleasure meeting you!  It's people like you that make this forum such a great community.  Again, I cannot thank you enough for all of your help and for your kind words.  Don't worry, I am working diligently at working out the last few bugs.  I'm hoping that it will not take me longer than a week or two.  I'm looking forward to going on that ride with you!  :D

Issues to sort out

1) For those who don't know, I have three minor things to fix on my bike.  Most of you remember the issues that I had with the crappy work on my gas tank from Benjies.  Well the same crappy work was done to my oil tank.  I thought that I had all the tank fixed.  All the pin holes from crappy welding was fixed, but the fittings do not seal.  While the bike is sitting and running there are no issues.  Once you take it out on the road and put the engine under pressure, oil starts pouring out of the coupling and all over the engine.  To fix this, I have ordered new Aeroquip AN couplers and a weld-in bung from Summit Racing.  I'll take the tank back to a welder to get this fixed.

2) The clutch is barely working.  It shifts just fine with the engine on, but once you put it under power, you can barely shift gears.  So on my test right, I didn't go above 3rd gear.  I'm going to take the clutch apart.  I'm getting rid of the Cycle X plates and go with another brand.  I tried all kinds of adjustments and nothing works.  I already have heavy duty springs, so I am considering going with OEM friction plates.

3) The last issue should be an easy fix.  I have what some call a "Hanging Idle."  What this means is that while you are out riding, you accelerate, or just rev the bike and the RPMs come down very slowly when you release the throttle.  You would think that this is because of a kink in your throttle cables or that they are too tight.  But this is not the case.  From what I read, the main cause of this is from the bike running lean.  I haven't adjusted the air/fuel ratio yet.  Hopefully this will solve it.

I'll update when I get some progress.

Sam
