My electrical is done!

I hate to admit it, but the Motogadget M-unit is really worth the money.  I’m not very electrically inclined, and this is my first time doing all of my own wiring, but it was a breeze.  Once I got my headlight figured out, it was all down hill from there (Thanks for the help Cal)!  This is how my wiring use to look

And this is how it looks now.  If I had to do it all over again, I would have cut the center framing out and braced it with some 1” pipe.  It takes up so much room and made it very tricky running all of my wiring.  I probably wouldn’t even have used a battery box.  It takes up too much space and even though my battery is small, I could have gone with a smaller-sized battery that puts out the same amount of cranking power.  I had to get creative with mounting my Dyna 2000, but it works out fine.  I was able to secure everything and none of the wires interfere with the seat.  In fact, I still have plenty of room under the seat hump.  I am happy with they way everything turned out.

One problem that I have with waiting for my engine parts to come in is that I start getting ideas and start spending money other places (I’m really trying to break that habit).  After I finished all the wiring, I decided that I didn’t want to use the traditional ignition switch.  I ended up buying a Motogadget M-lock.  The M-Lock is pretty cool as well.  I can’t knock Motogadget’s products.  I did run into one problem with the M-Lock.  My bike is all steel and I’m not going to run side covers or any other parts made out of plastic.  So I had no place to mount it and the signal will not pass through metal.  I ended up mounting the M-lock receiver to an old horn bracket.  Then I drilled a 1/2" hole in the bottom of my seat tray.  I placed a rubber grommet in the hole.  It also acts as a rubber cushion for the m-lock receiver and you cannot see the unit from the underside through the hole.  Because it’s rubber, the signal passes through it with no problem.  So now I have a cool custom feature and all I have to do is run the key up under my seat to cut the bike on/off.

The last thing I did was move my horn.  I had it between the frame, but I was worried about interference with the carburetor.  Luckily I was able to mount it over my oil cooler.

I spent less than that for a full custom aluminum gas tank and I received a top quality product with ZERO issues.  For that kind of jack, you should expect nothing less.

Yeah, if I could do it all over again, I would have gone that route.

I also got my seat redone.  I wasn’t happy with the way it came out.

This is what it looks like now.  Much better and exactly how I wanted it.

Sam - looks pretty good. I just did a 750 this weekend, same components. I installed the Reg/Rec on the underside of the pan to aide in cooling. I also installed the m-lock receiver underneath, ran the wires through the pan, then into the m-unit. Kept it hidden and allowed for open reading of the fob.

Be sure to program the second key, and don't use the Master afterward to start your bike; it wipes the second key.

Thanks Cal.  I want to order a second key, so I will have a spare.  I already programed the the key that I have with the master.  Do you know anyone that sells them?  Or will I have to get one through their company in Germany?

CRF, yes I am running the Motion Pro throttle.  I have the Motion Pro kit in my garage.  It has the cables and and throttle assembly.  It is already set up for Mikuni carburetors.  The throttle assembly that's on my bike now will not be used.

Cal,

I'm trying.  My engines parts still haven't come back from CycleX.  I'm actually going to give Ken a call in the morning.  Right now there is nothing else I can do.  And since I have to sit around and stare at my bike everyday, I ended up doing something that you told me not to do.  I bought more stuff for it.  I'm in the process of swapping out the forks.  I have a set of GSXR 750 forks that I sent off to have revalved and set up for my weight.  I'm going with black forks and getting rid of all the gold on my bike.  I was planning on eventually swapping out my HD front hub with one from Devin at Cognito.  Since I have time, I decided to go ahead and do it.  Hopefully I will hear something soon about my engine so I can wrap this bike up.  I'll keep you posted.

Spiffy, if you are talking about the wiring, I got it from Dime City Cycles.  They have every wire color that you need.

Thank BrandEn!

Unfortunately, I did not document how I installed my swingarm spools.  I was looking through my old photos but couldn't find any.  Here is a link to the spools that I used (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Swingarm-Spools-Sliders-Honda-Suzuki-Kawasaki-Ducati-KTM-BMW-Triumph-8mm-Black-/160939348420?hash=item2578bb91c4&vxp=mtr.  I found that this set works the best.  There is a spacer built into the inner side of the spool and it doesn't sit flush against the swingarm.  This allows you to have plenty of space for your axle adjuster to slide back and forth without coming into contact with the spool.  A 8mm hole was drilled and tapped and the spool screws right into the swingarm below the axle.

If you want a picture of it, let me know.  After I get off of work today I'll pull off the spool and take a picture for you.

Yes a picture would be fantastic! I looked at the link but there are a few different choices. It would be cool to see exactly what you used because I think I going to have to copy you..... If you don't mind.

I don't mind at all!  Trust me, I've learned a lot reading your builds, along with others on this forum.  The spool that I used was for the 2002 Suzuki GSXR 750.   That link that I gave you is for a one-size fit all.  These spools fit on pretty much any bike as long as they have the 8mm mounting hole.  This is the exact one that I bought for my bike and should work for you.

I do have some pictures on my phone.
- If you look at the lower part of this picture, just below the lower shock mount, you will see the location of the hole that was drilled for my spools

- In this picture, you can see it mounted.  It clears the axle slider

I'll take another close up picture when I get home.

I know that it has been awhile since I have updated my build.  No I have not given up.  I’m still around.  I’ve been doing my best to maintain my sanity while I’ve been waiting for my engine to arrive.  I have even gone as far as throwing a cover over my bike so I wouldn’t have to look at it in my garage anymore.  I have been working on small projects (or improvements) to past the time by.

The first change that I made to my bike was changing my forks.  I have never been a big fan of the gold forks on my bike and I’ve been looking for ways to change it.  I also wanted to upgrade my front wheel.  My plan was to eventually switch to Cognito Moto’s front hub later down the road.  I figured since I have the time now, I should go ahead and do it.  I scored a nice set of 2011 GSXR-750 forks and a lower triple tree on ebay.  I ended up sending my forks to RG3 Suspension and had them revalve it, set it up for my bike and weight, and they anodized my forks black.  I sent my triple tree off to Cognito Moto to get the stem pressed into it and powder coated.

Here are my old GSXR-1000 forks removed

I saw this as a great opportunity to improve on what I had originally done.

Here is my original lower triple tree.  I didn’t like the way my steering stops turned out

I wanted to do something a little nicer, so I borrowed from Devin’s design and came up with my own steering stops.

I assembled my triple tree and outlined where my steering stops are going to go.

I also drilled and tapped the lower trees for the new bolts

I bought a piece of 0.5 x 0.5” aluminum stock and drilled a recessed hole in it.  I made the hole about 2mm larger than the bolt so I can have a little room to adjust it.

New steering stops test fitted

Here is the finished product.  I really like the way it turned out.

Here are my new steering stops installed

I also wasn’t completely happy with the way my steering damper fit.  Plus it was also gold and I decided to get rid of it as well.

I drilled and tapped my lower triple tree in order to mount my new steering damper in a better location

Since I got new forks, I decided to get rid of my cheap clip-ons and replace them with a nice set of Vortex clip-ons.

Here is my new steering damper installed.  I like the way it turned out.  It looks much better!

Here is my triple tree installed.  One thing that you may not have noticed is that I redesigned my upper triple tree clamp.  I even lowered my gauge about an inch.  It makes the whole front of the bike look better.  The Vortex clip-ons also have a better angle and look 100 times better.

Here’s my front wheel laced to my new hub.  I like this so much better than my old Harley hub.  Plus, it makes me feel a little better (and safer) being able to use a set of OEM rotors and not having to drill them.

New (used and in great condition) rotors

The black forks look so much better than the gold forks!

One thing that really made my day was coming home and seeing this….

A big box of parts from Dime City Cycles

And this…

A box full of my new parts and the rest of my engine from Cycle X.  After six months of waiting, I can finally get started on putting this bike back together.
