Gauges that tell the truth. Welcome to the 21st century.
« on: November 04, 2014, 09:53:01 PM »
Finally something about the new century that I like.
Just fitted these Speedhut gauges, GPS speedo is brilliant, tacho is great too. My speedo was telling me I was doing 100kph when in fact I was doing about 90, this was after I did the damping fluid caper. This explains all the #$%*tards on my arse out on the highway.
Gearing is 17/48, tacho is at 4,200 revs at 100 kph. It's just so good knowing what speed you're doing, no more changing tyres and your speedo is effected, no more speedo and tacho cables.
I couldn't get an accurate pic so I took a few, these three give you a decent idea of how they look.
Cheers, Nic.

Looks flash mate, I only wish I went with the GPS version when I did mine.  I had to adapt a VFR750 speedo drive onto my bike to make mine work and it was a lot of work I could have saved myself.   :-\

Yes mate, I love the gps speedo, I'm not impressed with the dull night lighting of the gauges though as I have just found out tonight. For the money you'd think they could do better.

I don't have an issue with the lighting of mine, if anything they are a little too bright. ;D

Cal, I run a vfr750 speed sensor on mine, to calibrate it you put it in calibration mode, ride for four kilometres and your done. The only downside is that you need a measured 4km section of road. I'm lucky where I live, we have a measured 5km stretch of road on the highway, marked every kilometre.

I've been putting an old basketcase Silverwing together and today I noticed the speedo doesn't work (odo was fine).  This is after I bought  a new speedometer gear of course.  There's some on ebay at well over $100 so this thread has me thinking about new speedo altogether.  Considering I completely rebuilt the engine, it would be nice to have the odometer set at 000000 too.  What are some good brands I can get here in the states?

And are there any that will mount easily in a "normal" speedo casing?

The cases I used were reproduction ones from some cheap chinese guages I had, they were for a 750 K4 I think. ;D

That's good because it turns out I got rid of that 650 stuff I had.

It's probably the "blue illumination" interfering with your night-vision. But I like the idea of a GPS-enabled speedo. Do they have an option which has red illumination instead of blue? And do they still interface with the speedo cable for when circumstances do not allow a reliable GPS signal?

They have pretty much any combination you want, I went with the blue because of the tendancy of red light to disappear at night.  They aren't an issue as long as you don't stare at them for an extended period.  ;D

Yeah, I'd guess that the issue with a rider staring at his gauges for an extended period of time when riding his motorcycle wouldn't have anything to do with it being dark, the color, or brightness of his gauges and everything to do with the car/truck/bridge abutment that he just ate at speed.

Hey, while I'm posting, what's the issue with us having to jump through 23 hoops when we try to post a message here? I'm talking about that "human verification" sh*t, it's enough to chase all the real humans away I'd think? Why don't you just put spambot filters in place like 99.9725% of the web-forums and don't decide to allow them to have accounts here (since you apparently have things set up so that you have to manually approve each and every membership application)? No disrespect intended, but it seems like just another case of someone punishing the innocent because they can't be arsed to deal with the guilty to me.

The verification goes away after a couple of posts, 5 i think. It is to deter the trolls and grubby sellers from the forum. It is usually too much work for them.

I can't tell from that angle, is that entire gauge sitting inside the stock black casing?

So far so good, they are holding up far better than the chinese chrome on the guage cups.  They still work fine and thus far, I have had no sign of any water ingress into the guages, even after going through a few good downpours.  ;D

Well, I did it.  Speedo cable on the way as well as a speedhut gauge.  I went with the speedo only thus far since they didn't have a tach/temp combo like the old CX/GLs did.  The cable is off an old VF750 sabre.  I went with this 0-100 MPH speedo in 10MPH increments http://www.speedhut.com/gauge/GR338-SPEEDO-16/1/Speedometer-Gauge-100mph-programmable.  This Silverwing isn't seeing 100 MPH so I really didn't need anything higher than that.
