Wire Suppliers
« on: November 03, 2014, 11:24:46 AM »
Howdy,

Im looking for a supplier that I can order wires from, I want to remake a portion of the electronics with new R/R, and connections. I am about to place an order with Oregon Motorcycle Parts for the plastic connections, but i need a supplier for all the other wiring, i wanted to order spares that way I can also wire up this 240z with relays, but ill figure that out later.

apparently from http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=71709.0
I need
14 AWG - Red/White
16 AWG - Black and Red Wires
18 AWG - Everything else?

Anyone know a supplier that would give me wires in like 10-20 ft rolls? I don't really want to order 3000' from digikey. :(

Ciao,

Rama ;)

Rama, you could get small amounts from bulk reels in the electrical parts section at DIY stores like Home Depot, Lowes, etc.. Just be sure to get stranded wire, not solid. They wouldn't stock coded wire like red with white tracer but, you could always get a package of color coding tape to mark your ends for tracking.

My best luck has been buying shortish bits of multi conductor wire at electronic surplus shops.
There are 10 US standard wire colors (black, brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, gray, white). Once a multi cable - each wire must be identifiable - has more than 10 conductors they tend to use colors with stripes or dashes of another color. Sometimes they throw in non-standard colors (ie pink, light blue, light green, etc). If you can find a 25 conductor 16ga cable, it will have 25 different wire color patterns. And - these cables usually have the high flex wire that we want for a harness. I've found 100+ conductor cables where they use multiple color dashes, but only in 20ga or less. I keep looking, though...
Note that some multi cables have "twisted pairs" - half the conductors are just white, each white one twisted with a color coded wire. Humbug.

I just picked up a spare, ragged Honda wire harness. It has all the colors and gauges I've needed so far.

I just started my winter project for my 76F  whish is including a whole new custom minimal harness w/ m gadget unit :)

This is my wire source:  http://www.wiringproducts.com/

Tons of great stuff there, different qualities of wire, and sold in smaller rolls around 20-25'.  I bought all the SXL wire for my project (higher temp rating) and it's some really nice quality copper.
