Using your phone as Speedo and/or GPS
« on: November 19, 2014, 05:55:40 AM »
I can figure out how to get power up to the handle bars, but is the charging system on a CB550 up to the task of powering a smart phone while the bike is running?  Assuming everything is in good shape and working properly?

Get a good phone holder so it doesn't go by-by at 70MPH. Ask me how I know  >:(

I have a small 12 v usb charger inside the headlight bucket to run a dash camera,i soldered a pair of leads onto the connectors that are supposed to plug inside a cigarette socket, they have bullet connectors hooked into wires already in the bucket, one earth and one becomes live with key switched on.

As said, should be able to handle it. Although... I'd still use a toggle switch to activate the circuit so that you can, if needed, extinguish the draw should a drain be a problem. Better to isolate the circuit and be able to kill it, then to need to kill it and have to do roadside repairs in the dark, wet cold of night...

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S.
