scored a slot car set
« on: October 31, 2014, 10:04:38 PM »
I haven't played one of these since I was a kid.
My neighbor across the park is moving out and can't take it with him.

Cool we had a Eldon. With crossover lanes and a laneshifter that made you take a longer corner, if you came into it too fast. We sure had fun with that track..

Cool stuff. I had an old Aurora AFX track for years, the old style that took 2 metal alignment pins and a plastic clip to connect each section. I had been messing with them and collecting slot cars since I was a kid so I had a big collection of cars and enough spare parts to keep them working for years. I finally sold it all about 20 years ago and by that time old AFX stuff from the 60's/70's was collectible especially the cars so I got a good chunk of change out of it.

Those look like the larger size cars ?  We used to put masking tape on the rear wheels so we could do 'burnouts' down the straights and power slides in the corners :)  Lots of fun back in the day.

Shim the magnets with electrical tape. De-wind the armatures or rewind with larger gauge wire (thicker). You can even hook up a battery in the controller to provide reverse aka power brakes.

+1 on the rewind with thicker wire. Also, used to put Oil of Wintergreen on the tyres. Made 'em real sticky.

I like the idea of old slot cars if they suit this track.
As for trading, I could swap some dollars or maybe beer.  You may need to wait until next year or the year after for the beer because I'm not sure when I will get over to the States. Besides bikes what else are you into.

I had a 9 volt battery in my hand controller, I activated it with Delco points from a GM. I did a double star wind once with #28 silver wire, It would go 1/2 way down the straight and just lock up. I think it oversaturated the magnets.  We had a drag strip too, it went 12/24/36 volts as the car went down track.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.
