Never heard about the vinegar method. Will have to look into this as well. Does it work about the same as the works method? Or is it better for the metal?

here's a rusted out bicycle chain, soak on CLR for about an hour or so

i like to use Evaporust though as it leaves protective coating and don't have to worry about flash rust as much, pricey though

If I use evaporust can I get away with 1 gallon and just keep rotating the tank?

Oshkosh Radiator is the place on Bowen St. And yes, a radiator shop could do damage as they are not real careful on the paint. Try it yourself as I think you would be a lot more careful on the paint. My tanks I planned to paint so I was not concerned about it. If you ever decide to paint it let me know and I will steer you to my candy painter in Oshkosh. He does a fantastic job. Where are you located JP?

I think one thing that isn't shared as much as it should be is the word "Skimping". I've seen new members ask if they can clean old ass spark plugs rather then buying a new set of 4 for 8 bucks. Or else we see can I ride my tires even though they have cracks and are hard as hell.

Yes there are cheaper alternatives to get these machines on the road but you will continue to have headaches. One thing will become jacked. Fix that then another issue arises. This is normal for a bike that is 35-40 years old and had been neglected.

Vinegar is 12 bucks for 5 gallons. It works great. It's more of a process but I don't mind. I've used evaporust as well. 100 bucks for 5 gallons if not more, works well too. Take a trial and error route. Somethings will work and some won't.

If it were me I would try vinegar for the price. While the tank soaks I would change all the fluids... ie.... engine oil, fork oil, fork seals, new chain and sprockets, all balls bearings in the wheels and the steering neck. All this can be done while the tank soaks. Then you have time to adjust the valves, adjust the cam tensioner, adjust timing all to factory spec then put on new tires.  Of course the carbs will need to be cleaned and rubbers replaced in them.

It's winter time here in WI so this is the time to do all this before the riding season.

I’m located in Oakfield but the Bike is located in Van Dyne. Just got off the phone with my dad. Needless to say he was excited when I told him I was fixing it up for his 60th. But unfortunately after talking to him a bit longer he proceeded to tell me I shouldn’t have bought the bike for him and I should restore it for myself. He of course said he would love to ride it when it gets done. So by the looks of it this is going to be my bike now.

I checked the tires over and there is no cracking or hard rubber but I will definitely keep an eye on them. Overall the chain/sprockets look to be in good shape. I will be cleaning them and making sure there are no problems. As for changing fluids/fork seals that is definitely on my to do list. I’ll be picking up some vinegar this week and probably Friday I will run out and pull the tank. What are the best things to use for plugging the holes of the tank? Is it safe to assume the vinegar won’t harm the paint as well?

And of course that front brake will need attention. I am surprised if the front brake is not seized. I would change the $4 caliper seal and rebuild the master. New brake fluid and you will be good to go. Your call on the wheel bearings. I change my front and rear wheel bearings mainly cause they are 40+ years old and I would hate to be on the highway and have one go on me. Plus, those old bearings are not sealed. Now you can put some new sealed ones in there and she is ready for all the riding you can do. Don't worry if this is all new to you. The guys on this board are very helpful and share a lot. Congrats on the purchase of your Dad's...I mean "your" new project.

Buy 5 gallons of white vinegar first. Let soak for a few days then check. Most likely will need a week to clean it.

+1, and bet it'll clean up just fine if the whole tank is in the same state as in the pic.

No dice yet on finding a seat. The one on ebay ended and the seller isn't responding. Hopefully I find one reasonable in cost.

Careful when taking those side covers off- they look to be in good shape. Use a hair dryer to heat up all 3 contact points on each side cover- don't ask me why I use this to get mine off. I also buy new rubber for the contact tabs. Old rubber and brittle plastic can be a bad combo.

I always put a thin layer of grease on the side cover tabs and rubber grommets so they come off easier the next time.

Do you guys think my seat foam is fine under the cover? I'm not sure if the foam is shrunk or the cover is stretched.

Just by looking at it- Id say you would be doing yourself and the bike a favor by buying a new seat.

I would do as other suggest and give it the Windjammer circumcision stat!  Add a new seat and you will have a very good looking bike indeed.

Congrats!  Don't listen to your old man he wants that bike just doesn't like the idea of you spending money on him.  Other members have done restores secretly at night then presented the bike latter.

The only ride most young people want to give seniors now is a ride to the home so hats off to you.  Can't wait to see how the build progresses.

Don't worry about finding a seat. You have all winter to find one. Just add it to your list. Occasionally they even show up in the for sale area of this board. Keep in mind many of the parts like caliper seal and master cylinder kit are still available from your dealer as are the fork seals and fork gators. Many of these aftermarket parts are not the quality of the Honda part so choose carefully and ask questions.

Well I'll keep an eye out for the seat. Friday I'm planning on pulling the windjammer off. I'll be sure to get some pics. I'm planning on pulling the tank at the same time for derusting with white vinegar and baking soda after. I have ordered the pesky starter switch button to replace the missing one as well.

Is it just the button that is missing ?  Have you tried poking and pushing a Phillips head screwdriver in the button hole yet just to see if the bike turns over ? You will probably need to have the clutch pulled in (safety feature). Its a good way to test to see if the pathway is still viable. Bought a bike once and the PO was surprised when I did that and started it up.  When you pull the fairing and the wire harness have some good sealer handy to patch the wires where the harness splices were.  Easier to do it then then have to search for them later.  A product like Seal-All or other adhesive/sealer will work.
Another part you 'may' need is a 3 wire plug that will go from the harness in the bucket to the 3 prong stock headlight. It would have a white, blue and green wire.

jprochnow,

As far as the seat goes, whether the foam is or is not any good, I would go on ebay and take a look at a both seat form and covers.

Here is a link for a seat cover (with the strap)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-CB750-1972-TO-1976-REPLACEMENT-SEAT-COVER-SILVER-DYED-LOGO-with-STRAP-/251680639654?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a9955caa6&vxp=mtr

And here is a link for the seat foam.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-CB750-CB750K-CB-750-K2-K3-K4-K5-K6-SEAT-FOAM-/200572967229?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eb314993d&vxp=mtr

Total for both is $100.00 for both without shipping.

I am assuming that the seat pan on your 750 is in decent shape and usable.
May take a little work but I'm sure that you can do it.

If you do decide to buy a new seat, and not using the one that came with your 750, let me know.

Charlie

I may go the route of redoing it myself if I can't find one. As for the trim that goes around the seat how does that actually attach to the seat?
