Quick glass-pack question
« on: November 04, 2014, 11:04:12 AM »
I did a search and looked at the exhaust FAQ, but I still have one quick question for any one who has converted their MAC-style baffle to a glass pack baffle.

I found this photo from years ago, but I'm wondering if I need to have something on the front side of this homemade baffle to keep exhaust from going around the packing. Or maybe it just fits into the pipe tightly enough to prevent this? Thoughts?

Thanks.

Just don't wrap the fiberglass around the open inlet of the baffle. Yes a PO did that to my K0. I did an engine swap before I figured it out.

Wow. Like they totally sealed the exhaust's exit route with fiberglass?

If you match the length and diameter of what you pulled out it should sandwich in there nicely. That's two easy measurements.

Yes the engine was black on the inside with trapped carbon. it lives under a shelf now.  it would run a few seconds and die.

I could do that, but I want to make the glass pack section longer than the original baffle, thinking that will be a bit quieter.

It's not rly gonna get any quieter, baffles and chambers are usually the only thing that does it. It will get mellower but not quiet by any stretch

I just made the new glass pack section out of some wire mesh and FMF packing. I made the tube about twice as long as the stock baffle. I'd say it's the same volume, but quite a bit smoother and mellower, as you say. Not bad for 20$.

It is definitely worth it to do the job, I have done the same on a megaphone I had. It really helps on the highway at 5k~ rpm, takes the edge off
