CB 550k2 Queries
« on: November 06, 2014, 01:44:15 PM »
Hi All, I have just joined the forum as my knowledge of the cb550 is limited.
Although I own other Honda's I need advice on the 550k2
This came into the Uk 2 years ago from Colorado and is very nice but after riding the bike I found handling terrible (wrong size tyres, American) and head bearings shot.
The bike also has a lovely flat spot when pulling away!!!
The previous owner has fitted a 400 handle bar cut out switch and run the cable outside the bars, He also opened up the switch casing so wiring would not be crushed.
I think I can repair this switch so that is not really a problem.
But the left Indicator switch is badly discoloured and on this bike it is the expensive rare switch, is this because the bike comes with a audible indicator siren.
Can I do away with this and use another model switch maybe 400.
Has anybody had similar problems.
Any feed back most welcome and thank you Gary.

Personally, I would buy a new proper control if I plan to keep the bike. If not, then get a cheap used one....

Thanks Steve O for your reply.
Not sure what I'm going to do with the bike yet but always wanted one. I first went for a ride on one in the early 70s. (500) and after that I have always been a Honda man.
Do you think I should post my question on the tech part of the forum as I don't really want to keep the audible part. It looks to me my switch has 10 wires where the other models have 9 and 1 wire is for that audible device.
I have also seen many things on the engine flat spot, but beside a engine tune is there a common problem that causes this.
thanks again gary.

the 550 handles quite nicely so get some proper tyres, that should help. you may need to make sure the suspension is ok, as well.

replace that head bearing with a tapered one.

do the full 3k maintenance as described in the manual (see here, part 9: http://www.sohc4.net/cb550books/).
see if tuning everything properly improves your flat spot. the 550 is know to have a bit of a flat spot as per design, see here: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=7401.msg67251#msg67251.
it should not be so extreme that it bogs you down, however. and you'll be using it from 5k rpm upwards if you ride it properly, anyway.

there should be a buzzer mounted behind the left fork ear which is meant to beep together with the turn signals. just unplug it and enjoy the peace and quiet.
