Numpty here needs help with fork seals... and a gap... Pics
« on: November 10, 2014, 04:57:03 AM »
So i ordered some seals for a cb750k (69) and due to being fairly far away from the world i packed the disassembled forks away and waited for the seals.

They arrived the other day and upon reassembly I am noticing this:

There is a gap between the circlip and the seal. the bush was installed and even with the seal i see about a 5mm gap. Only thing i can think of is the seal is kept pushed up against the circlip by the pressure of the springs? if so it means my springs are knackered as there is not much pressure at all.

Am i missing something... any help appreciated

PS I know the 69 fork seals are different and these seem the same dimensions of the ones i ordered being specifically 69.

The seal can float in there under the circle clip and settle in. There used to be a large metal washer that fit between the seal and clip on some years, think early bikes that can fill that gap also.
I believe some guys use seals from a DOHC 750 that are a little taller as an upgrade to fill that gap.  I have not had a problem with a 'small' gap.

Looks like part #14 is the large washer I was referring to.

Yip, i see it, i was wondering if there wasn't something that was supposed to possibly go in there.
I kept all the parts since disassembly and No14 is definitely not there.

(tx for the link)

I'm gonna have a rummage around and see if i cant find one...

if not

what do  you guys think of  cutting a 5mm "clip" outta PVC ?

You really do not need the PVC spacer. Just put the seal in far enough to get the circlip on and you will be fine.

Thunder,
I just finished doing the same job on my K6.
Listen to Johnie.  When you put the new seal in, just drive it in far enough to clear the circlip groove.

Also, the most common "Genuine Honda" fork seals measure out to 11mm and appear to be double lipped.
There is a fork seal that you can get from David Silver that measures 13.5mm tall and appears to be triple lipped.
The seal from David Silver https://www.davidsilverspares.com/parts/  appears to be very substantial.
I ordered both the 11mm and the 13.5mm to compare the two side by side.

I decided to install the 11mm seals.  Reason was a stiction issue with the thicker seals.  I figured that if the 11mm seals started leaking, I could always replace with the thicker ones.

Hope this helps,

Charlie

Righto, thanks guys , will install tomorrow, and look around and see if i don't have the No 14 washers lying around amongst the spares.
I just hate the idea of the seals floating as the fork movement goes up n down, but they should be ok , which reminds me i should also measure the spring length to check its in limits.

Thanks guys
Thor

there is nothing wrong with the seal floating, it doesn't impact the seals function in any way

this type sealing is not ment to move the autside. it are a press fit at autside...NOT to move..i dont say that it vill leat or move..but it are made for starsonary montage

autside sealings have the lip at the autside/or both side..like hydralik one vay cilenders..but this type have clips to hold them on or in a grove like brake calipers..

there is nothing wrong with the seal floating...

Most time the seal is in so tight, it will not move.
