Cam Chain Tensioner Housing Vapor Blasting
« on: October 05, 2021, 12:00:50 PM »
Has anyone had any problems with the seal on the inside of the housing going bad or leaking? I've looked for other threads and nothing shows up. I'm about to send the housing out to be vapor blasted, but need to know if I can get away with just having the holes plugged on each end or if not will the blasting and curing ruin the seal inside? If it does ruin the seal and need to be replaced, does anyone know where I might find the replacement or is it just a standard seal of the same size?

I've searched and can't seem to even find anywhere that sells or mentions the seal inside there.
Thankful for everyone on this forum. Grateful to continue to learn so much.

I had mine vapor blasted, left an old screw in the clamp bolt hole, ribber plug in each end.

I pack the seal and shaft area with heavy grease. no issue with leaks on my K6. (Just grease to clean up when shoe is inserted. )
I tell my wife the motorcycles are an investment...

'will the blasting and curing ruin the seal inside?'
Curing? Did you leave out key words? As in are you asking about curing powder coating or what????

Sorry, I misspoke. I just meant the vapor blasting process.

I had mine vapor blasted, left an old screw in the clamp bolt hole, ribber plug in each end.

I honestly had no idea you're supposed to grease this. Well guess I know now.

I'm curious if Mark meant he packed the seal and shaft area with grease and added rubber plugs on either end along with the bolt to only protect it during the vapor blasting process? So that the vapor blasting particles wouldn't harm the seal area?

To clarify:

I plugged the holes to prevent any of the vapor blast fluid, with its glass grit, from getting into the working area.

I pack this point and the Tachometer drive cable motor connection with heavy grease to provide an additional level of oil containment and lubrication for these devices. Been doing this since I tried three times to stop the Tach connection from seeping oil in 2007/2008.

Sorry for the confusion.
