Same electrical problem however, can be asked and answered over and over and over again....

An oil thread is really needed, the solution is a sticky one at top with fresh information and new can be asked in this only thread about motor oil for our old CB's.
I fully agree. There's been a lot of development in tribology over the years and these popcorners seem to suggest that oil is oil and it is the same all over. Well, it's not. That the jokers, although warned by the title of the thread, never fail to show up and present their worn out jokes tells us: it is masked uncertainty and that's what it is.

Delta, the reason guys joke around is cuz other guys take it so seriously...bottom line, PUT OIL IN YOUR BIKE if your gonna ride it.  These bikes are probably some of the most durable and hardy engines ever made.  I have hardly ever used the same oil twice in a row, and the difference in performance is barely noticeable.  If your clutch is incorrectly adjusted, it's gonna slip, stick, and shift bad no matter what oil you got in there.   All the rest of the info here, and in the rest of the threads is basically subjective.
If it works good, it looks good...

Seanbarny, with all respect but I can't stand the hypocrisy. Always peeking because you never know you're about to miss something and then - hahaha - ridiculise others. Hey, I have no problem to confess I always read oil threads and every now and then I learn something new. Who are the jokers trying to impress? Monthly I receive a magazine (it's not in the shops) meant for the pro's in the garage- and transport world and every month there's a least one article about tribology. Never read any jokes there.
Now if the jokes were really funny and original... but they are not.

Another suggestion for the OP. I don't know, I use Castrol Power RS 10w-40 with the zinc additive ZDDP. I'm not an old timer here and haven't tried much oil. But with this I feel no problems. Shifts smoothly and it is very easy to find neutral, even when hot and even after I had just pushed it hard. I've read a lot of the oil threads thinking it was paramount to get the BEST oil. But since so many people have had great luck with so many different kinds of oil I'd say it doesn't matter. And poor performance is more subject to improper clutch adjustment and wear. The only unified thing on these oil threads is it has to be a low detergent motorcycle oil designed for wet clutches and a zinc additive helps. Read up on the importance of zinc for these motors if you want. There's a lot of information about it.

Good luck and never speak of oil again. Haha, just kidding...or am I?

Delta - what new info did you learn in this thread?

The "what oil is best to use" threads are numerous on this forum, it's asked over and over and the answer is always the same.  The running joke is that we sit back and eat popcorn while the same answer is given, sorry that you don't get it.
I would hate to go through life being serious all the time.

Every time I learn there are a lot of rumours and there's much confusion. Seldom the sources - if presented at all! - are worth even looking at. Still I do.

As if I hadn't noticed. Actually the joke is on you and the popcorn jokers (I would hate to be that original!). Every time they and their attitude show up, I'll be there with my serious voice and the same message in reaction just like they are with theirs. See the running joke? Sorry that you don't get it.
Actually I would have preferred to prolong it a bit further by commenting on someone's contribution in which he violated the privacy of his (or someone else's) dogs. But you forced me to come clear. Thank you very much.

That prices for synthetic oil in Sweden are outrageously high. Surely, during your next social gathering, you will be able to use this to your advantage while people listen in awe to your detailed knowledge about a country that most people in the States would not find on an unmarked map of Europe.  There you go: Both, educational and entertaining.

All seriousness ass-ide...

I loaded My 82 900f with Rotella JAMA rated synthetic last oil change.  Neutral is easier to find when hot, first gearshift to first, when cold, is smoother...

And that provokes you to repeat yourself over and over again?

Maybe they think it is kinder(?) to do so instead of simply reminding members to use the search link instead of arguing the same subject over and over again in the same way and then closing/locking the thread. Bandwidth being cheap these days. Or maybe they're not staff here and cannot do so (and have forgotten about the report post link).

There is a Honda Civic forum where people tend to get yappy instead of shutting down pointless threads. I just figure, you know, blame it on AOL and the Endless September they provoked; even kids can access the Internet these days. First time someone goes and invents a time machine, the problem ought to go away with little loss other than a few corporate gasbags and some millions of free CDs, thus requiring all the small farmers to find something else that's shiny that they can hang from string in their gardens to scare the crows off.

After 4+ decades of Castrol 20w-50 I am switching (per Hondaman) to the Valvoline 4-stroke motorcycle oil 20w-50 DINO. I also add zinc. Dan

I had pretty good luck with the Valvoline stuff, with added zinc to smooth out the clutch on takeoff, and not be so sticky. Then I found some of the Bel-Ray (it's hard to find here) and put in their EXL Mineral type in 20w50. It immediately (within a couple miles) ran quieter, idled better, and shifted smoother. As I kept using it (until the cold stopped me) this Fall, the bike got smoother and smoother. Since it was just rebuilt, some of this is the break-in, but the noise issue is not: the suddenly-quiet engine, silky clutch, and easy-to-find Neutral tells a [good] story about the EXL. Expensive, though!

...and, it is a mineral oil, which has long been my favorite type. That's been gone in these parts for decades. The mineral oils are naturally non-sudsy, so even if the manufacturer added detergents, they will wear out quickly (by design) and leave the bike with non-foaming oil.

The most immediate difference I found between the Valvoline and the EXL: after a 90 MPH run with the Valvoline and hitting an offramp to wait for a traffic light (i.e., typical north Denver riding style), the Valvoline would display some foam in the oil tank. The EXL shows none. This performance is much like the old Castrol XLR mineral oils that were so excellent for these engines, but vanished in 1996. I can't give further evaluation until this sub-zero winter leaves, grr...
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Unless I've misunderstood Delta, I'm in complete agreement. There are no motorcycle specific oils, only motorcycle specific labels.

It's so funny every time the popcorn jokers take the effort to present their "jokes" over and over again. Why? What are they doing here in this thread?  To use Synthetic oil or not to use Synthetic Oil is the question? - one would thnk that clearly warns them there's nothing in it for them. Or... is it?  ;D

That's it I'm taking Pimpzilla for a ride in my regular old CB550 which uses 20/50 Castrol and has since I owned it, AND my popcorn and riding over to a pod thread! 8)

Not sure why you would because the Castrol 10/40 is an excellent choice and would do just fine.

That's exactly what I use in my '78 550 with EBC discs I just installed a month ago. Castrol synthetic 10w40 and there isn't any slipping. Shifting is smooth and I can always find neutral with ease. Why don't you go ahead and try it out. Won't cause any damage. Best to form an opinion based on real tests that you perform on your own bike.

What dou you think about Motul Classic Car Oil that they recomend for old cars and bikes? You can check the right oil here: https://www.motul.com/gb/en/products/recommendation

I saw something interesting (15W50 or 20W50) like this:
http://motul.speclube.com/products/all-products/classic-oil-20w50-2l/
or this:
https://www.motul.com/de/en/news/products-innovation/motul-classic-oil-sae-30-and-motul-classic-oil-sae-15w50

Now i am using Motul 3000 4T 20W50 mineral, whit no ZDDP add, because i can`t find it here, in Romania, for now.
I found some aditive from Red Line http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=121

I mixed 4oz of Prolong in with 4 quarts of used oil I got for free from the dump tank at pep boys.   I ran the engine for 5 mins to mix it all around, drained the oil completely and the engine has run perfectly without oil for 20,000 miles.  And I also have had no oil leaks of course.  And I also have some swampland in florida for sale.
