Rear axle spacer question
« on: November 10, 2014, 01:29:22 PM »
I'm trying to mount my Henry Abe wheels to my Sweep The Floor bike. The swing arm I have is an F model swing arm.
The H.A.'s use a K style brake backing plate. I have several axles and spacers here, but they're all from a K model. I can't get an accurate measurement of the F model spacer with it mounted to the bike (my OTHER bike), but it looks to be a couple of mm longer/wider.

There are a couple of rear axles on eBay but I can't be 100% sure that they're actually F model axles/spacers.
I posted an ad in the WANTED section, but would any of you have a spacer?

If push comes to shove, would there be a problem with stacking a thick washer or two between the inside of the swing arm and the K spacer?

Sounds like you got it figured out...yes the f spacer is longer.  It looks like the f is the assembled wheel, and you are holding the k spacer, right?  Pretty sure the backing plates are all the same, it's the f swingarm that is wider, requiring a longer spacer.  The f swingarm also uses different axle adjusters than the k, they might be slightly thinner.  I can't think of any reason why making up the difference with washers would hurt anything.  All this is from memory as I don't have any 550's on hand anymore.
If it works good, it looks good...

Yes, I have a 550F (pictured) and the bike I'm building is from spare parts (see my thread in the Projects forum, the STF2 Bike).

The STF bike has an F swing arm and all the spacers I have are for K bikes.

Shouldn't be too hard to find that f spacer or whip something up.  Just take the back wheel off your f so you can measure.

The late axles have nut on the end, unlike  the early ones.
I think backing plate off 77/78 K pretty well hasbto fit right .

I have that style of axle, too. I also have a late style backing plate but, unfortunately, the H.A. wheel take the early style backing plate.

It looks like the F spacer is about 6.5 or 7 mm wider than the K model.

Without removing the axle from the 550F, the best measurement I can get is approx. 2" long, or about 51.7 - 52 mm.

For comparison, the K spacer is about 45 mm. The F spacer is a little over 6 mm longer.
