Hi All,
I'm beginning a cafe build on a 750. I have engine parts in several boxes and an engine case which I know does NOT match the parts in the boxes. However, I'm simply going to start out and learn as I go along - starting with the case. Questions below are in Bold.
Background, I had a 1972 cb750 cafe racer designed by a known builder which I rode for several years. It was a lot of work to get the bike running - even after the work the builder had done. I learned a lot about the carbs and the stator and electrical components as those issues were the most perennial.
I sold that bike and now want to build one from ground up. I have an engine case which I picked up for a few pennies and wanted begin with an engine build soup to nuts. It will at least be a learning lesson. I want to do it right and to be certain of my own work rather than guess at what was done (or wasn't) by a re-conditioned motor.
So here is where I'm at (pictures attached), the case number if Cb750E 2451001. Does anyone know where I can look up which cb750 model this case number belong to? Is there a directory of honda engine numbers?
Second, I intend to take this to a machine and body paint garage to have the case cleaned up and painted. Can I sand blast it? how about the inside?
After prep, what paint do I have to use on the inside?
On the outside? Can the case be powdercoated? Or is there crankcase paint that is fairly gasoline resistant? The other bike I had suffered float bowl problems which dripped gas on the engine case top and paint eventually peeled off. Is there an enamel brand that is resistant to this?
As I go along, I'll post pics and look to advice. I frequented this forum a ton the first year I owned my first cb and some of the posters here are Gods when it comes to knowing everything about these bikes. Seriously, there should be a donation tab on this forum for wisdom imparted and those posters who regularly solve problems should be entitled to that bounty. I know, I know, it would be too difficult to regulate, and people here are just trying to help each other. Just pointing out the incredible value that is imparted.
Many thanks in advance for anyone's advice.
