750 K6 Handlebar De-Wiring
« on: November 12, 2014, 08:53:49 AM »
I'm at the point where I need to pull the switch wiring out of the handlebars on my 750 K6.
I've read a number of threads about fixing and restoring the switches which I plan to do.
But I tried to pull the wiring out and it isn't coming out so before I do something really stupid, I thought i'd ask how you guys get the wiring out of the handlebars without damaging anything?????

Thanks,

Charlie

Try and get some silicone lube spray in there. I had a heck of a time with mine ... for some reason my original control wires were cut off (and left inside the bars) and then they managed to thread in the new wires in there as well. I had to put the bars in the vice and had my foot against the bench while pulling on the wire. ha

However, I ended up replacing my controls so I wasn't too worried about damaging the wires.

You're snaking the wires out of the bars right? Pushing one end and pulling on the other end

goldarrow has it right...push one end and pull the other a bit at at a time. I think I even blew a warm air hair dryer in the tube to soften up the wires a bit. To get them back in I run a wire or strong string through the bars to help pull then back through while feeding them from the other end.

Guys,

Yup, I'm trying to get the wires out.  Need to clean up and maybe rechrome the handlebars.  Not to mention, cleaning up the switches.

I tried pushing on one end and pulling on the other. Didn't get very far.  I don't have the silicone lube spray yet, but will pick some up tomorrow and the Hair Dryer thing sounds hopeful as well.

Fortunately the wires seem to be somewhat pliable, but they are 38 years old and never been kissed.  LOL

Was planning on using some 50lb fishing line to snake them back in when the time comes.

Thanks for the tips,

Charlie

What i found helped with pulling the wires back in was to get the dremil and lightly grind  the bottom sharp edge on the  hole..
