Hi! New to forum and 750k2ville.
« on: November 12, 2014, 08:52:13 PM »
Hello all!

First and foremost, this is my first carb bike but I know more than everyone here combined and I want to teach everyone about what motor oil is best.

.. .    ....     . ..

Kiddeeeeng lol. But seriously, first THANK YOU ALL past and present for all the great info and learning material on this site which inspired me to take the leap with my new cb750k2.

That being said, can I ask some questions?

1. My number four exhaust cap to reach valves is rounded and I can't take off. Any ideas?

2. I opened the power plant cover (thats the left side, correct?) and a BUNCH of black oil poured out, also when I re attached the cover after catching the oil with oil pan, I nowhave a steady cup of oil drippage every half day or so. Question is, is it normal to have oil inhere and should I tighten those Allen heads more or do I just need to adjust the seal a bit better?

3. PO has a lot of random mods but the petcock is annoying to safely remove without breaking it or fuel line so can I carb tune with tank on or can I just prop something under it to give it some height?

4. My front brakes actually touch the disc (can hear it when wheel spins)The wheel spins but there is literally no clearance. Should I back them off or is it normal?

5. Bike is kick start only but I would like to add a key start back in to avoid theft so will this be a huge pain in the ass? I don't even know where to begin on this one.

6. I ordered a new front tire, so can I swap out that tire with proper lift equipment my sexy self or do I need exotic tools for parts removal etc and should I do any other maintenance while I have wheel off, like bearings. (as long as tube is in good shape I can reuse correct? Going from standard front tire to a 3.5 so dunno if I need a larger tube)

That's what's been burbling around my head this past week so any help or directives would be greatly appreciated.

1. Use a file to square off to put a wrench on it
2. Power plant cover?? If you are talking about the stator cover, yes, there is oil in there and now needs a new gasket.
3. Yes.
4. There is an adj screw, I believe the spec is .006".
5. No
6.  Buy a new tube.

If you take a large pair of channel locks (type of plier) you can grab the round outside edge of the round tappet cover and get enough grip to break it loose. That will mitigate the chance of breaking out the middle.
As for your front brake if the bike has been sitting or it has not been serviced lately it should be disassembled and cleaned well and put back together. The seal gets crud behind it, the piston gets dirty and usually the brake pads have rust around the outside edges all which inhibit its function.
As for tank/petcock unless it is spotless inside the petcock may have to come off someday and a good cleaning may be in order. I have a slave tank made from an old riding lawnmower gas tank that I have hung on a frame and use for tuning etc so I do not need to rely on dealing with the stock tank or risk dropping/damaging it.
A new tube would be nice if your changing your front tire. You will know its condition when you remove but old tubes can get rust etc stuck to them from the rim. If it looks really old save it for a spare.

Yeah I have some channel locks. I'll try that on the weekend and if not I can file it. Great advice, thank you.

Bike hasn't been sitting but I know the prior owner didn't make the bikes service as a whole a priority by any means so I'll do what you mentioned. These are the sort of tips or thoughts I was looking for.

I got one of those gas reservoirs as well and I switched out the petcock for the same model-a lawnmower petcock I was told but the fuel line looks like thick hard barely malleable plastic with a chicken wire interior. It was a real pain getting it back in so I guess I'll tap into the other side which is just rubber. My tank is raw metal and it looks like it came out of Thunderdome lol so I dint mind a few bangs for now but I like your set up so I went the same route getting the reservoir.

So your saying my current tube, if in good condition Will fit the larger tires psi parameters? Probably will just get another tube anyway :T don't wanna do all that work then have a leak due to a flippen tube. I'll keep as spare though.

Great great perfect info. You're helping me out tons here.
