Frustration removing fork bolt
« on: November 14, 2014, 12:47:00 PM »
I am trying to remove the right fork bolt (large chrome nut on triple tree) to change my fork oil and I am about to lose my mind. The bolt will unscrew about 1/4" and then it will not come out any farther. It will continue to turn with very little tension but will not unscrew any more. All threads that I have read talk about removing this bolts as if it is a very simple procedure.. so what am I missing?

Thanks

Did you remove the spring? If so put it back in it helps keep the damper part from turning.

Even then it may turn. Borrow an impact wrench?

Spring is in place. I have tried using an impact wrench and basically I end up spinning the bolt at 6000 rpm with no avail...

You can probably just pull/pry it out then...it is just hanging up on a tight o-ring.  Maurice, I think he is talking about the cap at the top of the fork tube and sounds like you are referring to the allen bolt at the bottom.
If it works good, it looks good...

Like Sean said you have screwed it out of the thread zone and now it is just being held by a large o-ring. Get a grip on it with something and pull or pry that sucker outa there.
