thinking of switching to mags - cb400f
« on: May 24, 2005, 02:03:29 PM »
Hey folks,

This is something I've been thinking about given my recent difficulty with finding a decent spoked rim. I thinking for next year of going to a set of mag wheels on my 1975 CB400F. I really love the look of spoked wheels on the old bikes, but it's a lot of hassle when you're working with old and probably poorly maintained wheels. Does anyone know off hand what mag wheels would have the same dimensions as the spoked rims already on the 400?

Just from a quick measure (I'm assuming the width is taken on the outside of the rim), the rear seems to be 2.8 x 18 and the front seems to be 2.6 x 18.

I think RD400 rims would be about the right size, but I'd almost like to keep away from the hassle of the rear disc and master cylinder.

Any ideas?

Installed today a set of alloy rims laced to stainless spokes on my 400.  It was a royal pain in the ass to find the
rims, especially the front 1.60x18 (36 holes) rim.  I ended up having to buy from a company in England
recommended by Buchanan Wheels in CA.  Then I sent the rims to Buchanan to be laced to a set of stainless spokes.  It was damn expensive but looking at them now makes all the trouble and cost worthwhile.

I have a Daido alloy rim (2.15x18) laced to a 400 hub, spokes are a little rusty but a decent looking wheel and a stock steel front wheel in ok condition.   If interested let me know, like to get $60.00 for both plus shipping.

Dave Silver Spares in the UK have new rims and stailess spoke sets at fairly reasonable prices and building your wheels up on your own hubs is not terribly difficult.

If any of you cb400f fans live near Coventry in the UK, bring me a clean hub from your bike and I will build you a wheel with new rim and stainless spokes for £80 (front) or £90 (rear) as Long as David Silver doesn't put up his prices.

Dave, I got your pm and tried to reply, but for some reason the reply was not accepted. Also tried your eMail @btinternet and this was refused as no account. eMail me at jbaker@members.v21.co.uk with your address or telephone number and I'll try to help. Cheers, John.
