It is more likely they are may flys.  I was riding last week and got plastered with them.

When I lived on the northwest coast of Alaska I saw times when mosquitoes were so thick they'd create a haze looking through them, a restriction to visibility.

South-central Alaska has a translucent little fly-looking thing that is very squishy and likes to hover in clouds above the road. You can make it about a 1/4 mile through one of those before having to stop to clear your helmet visor. If you don't have a visor or have it open when you hit one of those clouds, it feels like getting hit across the face with a wet towel.

Driving thru Minnesota back in '74 with my van, noticed the engine temp was climbing.  Got out to check, and the radiator was so thick with gnats the radiator was clogged with them.  The front of the van was "fuzzy" from the millions of these gnats, even the radio antenna was coated on the leading edge.  Had to get them off the best as I could and drove to the next truck stop to use the carwash.  YUCK!
