help me awaken the beast.....steps to sure fire start up
« on: November 15, 2014, 11:19:31 AM »
So i have a 77 hondamatic  that  id say hasnt run in a good 10 20 years,  couldnt have because the person prior had kreem lined thebyank shut by keeping the petcock  in hahaha. So i soda bottle gas tanked it and she turns over but no audible hints of firing and the fuel poured out the bowl overflows onto the ground.  Took air box off to see if clogged and still no fire up.   Haven't checked spark.   Any steps  or thoughts  would be a help.  All lights come on and oil light goes off after a sec.  And once i stop cranking i hear liquids moving. So im assuming oil is circulating. Is there a way to manually spin the crank  to ensure  pistons are mobile?  First bike and first build

Since you have spun the engine with the starter and oil pressure is coming up enough to turn off the light It seems unlikely the pistons are not moving unless something really bad has happened.  You can remove the spark plugs and do a compression test with the throttle held totally open and see if you are fairly even and above 140 psi, you would likely be on your way to getting  it running. The carbs likely need to come off and be completely gone through. Be careful as the rubber manifolds between the carbs and head are no longer available and warming them thourghly with a hair drier or carefully with a heat gun may soften them enough to come apart without damage. You will need to check for spark while cranking and with the kill switch turned on too. Maybe this is enough to start with.

If it sat for 10-20 yrs, I'd definitely agree with pulling and cleaning the carbs. OR, get an already cleaned set from a K model for improved performance. Even tho lights, etc., seem to be working properly, wouldn't hurt to clean the electrical connections also.
