Carb adjustment for '76 cb750 carbs?
« on: October 04, 2006, 10:54:10 AM »
Hey guys Javier here. Just got my carb kit and almost ready rebuild or whatnot. Left 'em soakin overnight and will scrub after work today. I've got '76 carbs on my 78 CB750K, now I'm just trying to find where the carb floats should sit, where I measure from and what tool is best. More importantly the adjustment though. Thanks in advance.

Your manual should have instructions for an easy to make tool to measure float height.

There's also the Genuine Honda / NOS float gauge tool listed on eBay and it comes with instructions.

I believe its 26mm. There has been some debate over where exactly to measure from, some say the bottom of the carb body, some the gasket surface, some inside the niche the gasket sits in.
I do mine from the bottom of the carb body, to the bottom of the float.
I use a 6" rule with mm listed on one side, and I have bent it  90 degrees to make it a little easier.
The little bridge of metal that holds the 2 floats together needs to be level with the carb body.
Infact, most floats actually have a line or groove on them that you can go by, as in that line on the side of the float should be level
with the bottom of the carb body. Like so, =
It will get you close.
Another thing that makes all of this much easier for me is to take a lenght of tube and put it on the gas inlet for either 1&2 or 3&4
and blow through it. Of course you will need to hold the float that your not working on up, to stop air flow.
When you raise the float up (blow through the tube) and get either the groove on the float or the metal bridge between them, like so =  with the bottom of the carb body, it should just stop the air flow at that point.
As far holding them, its a bit of a pain.
I place either the #4 carb or the #1 carb on a towel on the ground and sit indian style with them leaning towards me and to the side so the floats hang open.
When making adjustments, make sure you only bend the tab that contacts the needle.

Cut out a big CARDBOARD "F" and use the length of the top and middle horizontal "--" to set your height (you can make several or re-cut one getting progressively less float height.)

use the vertical "I" for something to hold onto - then just cut the depth of the horizontal"--" to suit your float height

costs a lot less than ebay  :)

Why did you go to earlier carbs? Just wondering as there is no real gain by doing that other than parts are bit easier to find.

My loving mother thhrew away a box in her garage with a nice set that came with the bike. That is when I decided to leave CB's alone. I could'nt find a carburetor. I found one, 3 years later and now am reattempting to make run again. I used this bike as a daily driver for about 8 months 4 years ago, so I know it ran. It's just been sitting, I just don't know what I'm doing is all, and it makes it very difficult for me with absolutely no one to help.

As someone already posted, 26 mm is the correct float height, according to my copy of the factory manual.

To set it, I would:

1. Place the single carb on a flat surface with the air intake side down and the float pivot pin up. This allows the float to hang free of the float valve's spring, just touching the float valve itself. The float should easily swing on its pivot.

2. Measure (horizontally, since the carb is now on its side) from the bottom of the carb body (where the float bowl gasket seats against the body, inside the flange surrounding the bowl when it's mounted) to the now-outermost (bottom) portion of the float.

3. Adjust the float as necessary bring it within spec.

You can dick around with a ruler, cutting Fs out of cardboard and buying float gauges if you want. I use a digital micrometer, available just about anywhere tools are sold. Mine has the ability to measure internal and external dimensions as well as an extension/protrusion perfect for this application. It comes in handy for all kinds of things around the bike and, since I have more than one bike, I can use it to set float levels on all of them.

YMMV...
