Project completed (Pics included) UPDATE
« on: November 15, 2014, 04:20:21 PM »
Well, I officially completed the project this weekend and wanted to share. I'm posting here because, even though the project is done, the thread still has some catching up to do and I just couldn't wait; I hope you'll forgive me?

The following shots give an overview of the completed bike; the final thread post will be a bit more thorough, but you'll get the idea from these pics. Below (as attachments) are larger versions of these photos, so you can check them out for a more detailed look.

I've been working on the project now (on and off) for over seven years and just can't tell you how glad I am to have it completed. The first thing I bought for it (in 2007) was the headlight ring: it's the last thing I installed, and what a great feeling that was!

In reality, however, the wait has been more like forty years from the day I stood in that Honda dealer's showroom (November of 1974) and saw my first CB550. I was poor, overworked and underfed and there was no way in the world I could afford one, but I swore that, one day, I'd have one of those shiny bikes lined up in a row, even if I had to make one for myself.

I think I pulled it off, don't you?  8)

I still need to sync the carbs, but I drove her from inside the garage to where she sits in the shots (15 feet or so), so I know the clutch and tranny (1st gear, at least) work. Streets are covered in ice and snow right now and it's 6 degrees F. outside or else I'd take her around the block, carbs or no carbs... I guess that'll have to wait until it warms up to freezing, at least...

Thanks to everyone who leant their support and encouragement for the project, and to those who have found the thread useful, that's the frosting on the cake.  ;D

Thanks, guys. She's as close to "new" as I can get her. There's still a bit of tweaking to do; have to get the seat sitting correctly (a matter of adjustment) and that fat rear tire just has to go, but she's still pretty as a picture even with her warts...

Stunning beauty and a dream come true. The old style 550 with its 4 exhausts has always been my favorit. They were not imported in Europe. Thanks for al the beautiful pictures.

I think that's also one of the better colours?like back in the day all the English stuff these were replacing were black and chrome, any jap bike back then suddenly had these funky candy metallic paints that really fit the new era,hot rodders had started using them already so why not paint them from the factory to attract the young groovy generation?great polish work on the cases mate,i can tell the photos here aren't doing it justice,im not a purist by any means but once again that's a top job you've done there.

Ron,
Your bike is gorgeous. With that rotor (EBC?), she looks actually a touch nicer than the one you looked at in the showroom back then. Don't take her out anytime soon--our old Hondas, even if restored back to mint condition, don't take the salt kindly. I know that this feeling of accomplishment must be very satisfying for you, and that you must be very happy just looking at her. But I hope that, once the streets will be clean again, you will also do some nice rides with her. The new bikes perform much better in every aspect. But only this one can travel in time, taking you back 40 years. I wish that you will have many long and safe rides with your beauty.
I am happy for you, and I am also very glad to see one of these great bikes restored back to the original beauty instead of being ripped apart and rebuild as something it was never meant to be. Looking at your bike is something I truly enjoy. Thank you for saving this one. And thank you for sharing.
Tom

Beautiful job. I obviously have the same bike, also owned since new and I finished a long drawn out 17 year off and on restoration project on Labor Day 2 years ago. I clearly remember the exhilaration of my first ride after finishing the job, so my empathy for you is immense. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Don't make that a habit. You have wonderful exhausts. Best way to keep them good is to avoid short rides. There's an awful lot of pipe for just 125cc mind you. Personally I never start my bike for rides shorter than 25 minutes and by the time I enter the garage the pipes are hot. You may consider a little bit of twostroke oil in every tank. It also helps to check the little holes at the underside and see if they are still open. For the rest: use it, ride it. All in all my bike had more issues due to sitting than making miles.
