Is it possible to wheelie an 87 cbr600? Theyre like 400lbs and only like 85hp...or something along those lines...If so how would you wheelie? You HAVE to use the clutch right? at what rpms in what gear would you pull up? would you pull up or let the bike do the work? would you rev up the rpms and then let the clutch out fast or slow? Once up is it hard to balance and control? How to come down saftely?

I know its very dangerous, i dont plan on ever wheelieing on the street...but Im interested in learning how to do one just to mess around in the empty parking lot down the street from me.

Obviously, he needs someone to tell him that the key to wheelies on that particular make and model is to do it in shorts, flip-flops, and sans helmet; protective riding gear messes with the weight distribution dontcha know.

Wheelies are dangerous and I would never do one.

I never encourage reckless behavior.

Hell these ol' lead scooters we ride won't even do a wheelie........ ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
That's not possible! Those pics are staged! You must work for NASA ::) I'm going to try that on my bike right now..............................

NASA can't afford me  ;D

Do you need witness verification of that manuever?

Dear Darwin Award Finalist,

The committee is reviewing your application and has some answers for you.

1) Yes, it is -- just barely -- possible to do a wheelie on a 1987 CBR 600; however, your concern is justified.  The wheelie is actually named for Jim Wheeling who invented it while riding a 1982 GS 1100.  Few riders realize inauthenticity pre-1982 footage of wheelies performed by the likes of Evel Knieval, Hells Angels, etc.

2) Most instructors advise the use of a combination of both the "clutch" and "throttle".  The "throttle" is the handgrip on the right (when you are facing forward).  Your bike has only slightly more power than a modern scooter; therefore, it is important that attempt the wheelie from a standing start:

    1) Pull clutch lever in fully.
    2) Rev engine to redline.
    3) Let go of clutch lever.
    4) Hang on.

You may want to practice this maneuver several times before impressing your friends with your new skill.

3) You are to be commended for you dedication to motorcycle safety.  Not everyone knows that parking lot pavement is substantially softer than that on road surfaces.

Lastly, your question indicates a level of intelligence that leaves little doubt that you must be employed as knowledge worker; however, you may wish to pursue part time work as a Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructor.

The awards committee will be making final decisions next week.  It would not hurt your chances to send a photograph of you performing a wheelie.

Regards,

The Darwin Award Committee

Oh, they will wheelie, trust me, but you also run the risk of blowing out your front forks.  Wheelies are fun, they have their time and place.  with that said, I haven't wheelied in weeks.... and my last one wasn't on purpose... honest.

Dear Darwin Award Finalist,

Aren't the Darwin Awards for the people who do themselves in in the most creative and novel way? Any number of fools hurt/kill themselves doing motorcycle stunts every year.....I wouldn't have thought that is a particularly creative way to do it!

Just kidding with your post. Very original.

A long time ago there was a stir in the old forum by somebody asking how to wheelie a SOHC, and it turned out it was just a time waster -troll-.

I believe it has to do with age. When I was a teenager I tried hard to wheelie my bicycle and was completely unable. It was cool to see the guys who could maintain a wheelie as long as they wanted. I once flipped over and that was the end.

With internet video and all those films about stunts, youngsters are dying to learn all the tricks of the trade to be cool and impress the girls. The more things change, the more they stay the same. It has been always the same: impress girls and buddies, but only the tools are different.

That being said, I envy the stuntmen. But not because of the stunts, but because it means they have total control of the bike. When you are able to do a controlled rear skid, a nose wheelie, a wheelie, etc, you probably can ride your bike in a totally controlled way.

The same goes to pro racers. It's easy to pop a wheelie when all you have to do is to twist the grip. But those guys will keep calm when they feel their rear will is skidding in a turn, while most of as mere mortals would #$%* our pants with the mere thought of it.

I sometimes think about buying an old-beated bike and use it to learn some tricks, but then I think about the pain involved and forget about it.

The scary thing about this person (kid?) with a cbr600 is, in my opinion- if they're asking these kinds of questions, they obviously have VERY LITTLE time on a motorcycle, and shouldn't be trying that stuff at that stage in the first place.  I honestly think that any rider with enough time in the saddle would know the answers to these questions- as you come to know how much power your bike can provide at a given instance from experience, how it handles, etc.

my point exactly.  if you know what you're doing, knock yourself out[pun intended].  if you're quoting power and weight stats that you found on the intarweb and asking "how would you weelie, you have to use the clutch right? what RPMs? do you have to pull up? how do you land?" types of questions, you are obviously not in the category of "khows what you're doing."

plus, 400lbs and 85hp is pretty damn nice by our standards.  maybe not gixxer nice, but nice.

Me too, Raul!

When I can afford it I'm going to get a trials bike. Lot's of fun learning motorcycle control and stunt stuff, but at a walking pace. Less chance of hurting yourself, and you can do it in your backyard. A friend has a Sherco (you know, one of those banana shaped things) and it is an absolute hoot to ride. And best of all, if things go pear shaped you just step off it.

Of course I know Sherco. It's made in Spain...  ;D

A Trial bike is very good to learn, but then you cannot use those skills with other bikes. The gearing is very low, the torque is very high, the wheels are fat and low-pressurized. It's much better to buy an 80's 350-500 thumper, if possible for off-road, and fit street tires -like the super-moto bikes-. Some crash pads, some hardware on the tailpiece to protect in case of flipover and you are good to go.

You are right. But I am a 51 year old chicken who values his skin (even with the appropriate protective gear!) and who is just an eensy weensy bit afraid of doing an oopsy at speed. There, I admit it.

I don't think it's a matter of seriousness, but maturity. The problem with maturity is that it's like gray hair or baldness: sooner or later you will get it, want it or not. Once you become mature, decisions are not taken with the scrotch but with the brain. Some people think that buying cabriolets and coupes when undergoing the midlife crisis will make them younger, but they are wrong. There is a time and place for everything; I wore long hair when I was younger, but I would feel stupid doing it today -and I would be unable too-. Now I have discovered that it's much more fun to enjoy a long ride in my bike than to impress perfect strangers with a perfect wheelie when they will never know who is the wheelie guy wearing that helmet. Yes, you can say that doing a wheelie without helmet is the way to go, but I rather don't. I don't have a problem trying to emulate Evel Knievel, but not for free. If you want to see me popping a wheelie then please pay the entrance ticket...
