VintageCB750 wiring loom has 2 wires wrong on the k8
« on: November 16, 2014, 10:37:32 PM »
After putting my new wiring loom in my bike, my tach and speedo backlights failed to illuminate, and my turn signals would not work.  Here are the fixes, written for fellow wiring dummies:

1. Backlight not illuminating on the speedo and tach - There is a brown with a blue stripe wire that connects to the black (switched power) in the headlight bucket.  Change the connector on the brown and blue striped wire from female to male, and the hook it into the black wire multi-connector, which can be found in the headlight bucket.   The problem is that this brown and blue striped wire is female in the headlight bucket, and it must connect to a multi-wire connector that is also female.  The wiring diagram shows that there is a male-male wire that allows this configuration to work, but if you're like me, you didn't scavenge this wire from your original loom.  This can be found in the exact middle of the wiring diagram.

2. Turn signals not working - On the 6 wire plastic connector in the headlight bucket, you'll notice that the grey wire on one side does not match up with the grey wire on the other side.  On the instrument side of the 6 wire connector, push the grey wire's barb down on the blade, pull out the blade, and reinsert it so it will line up with the grey wire on the loom's side.  The grey wire comes from the blinker unit and delivers power to the turn signal hand control, which the aftermarket loom prevents from happening.  This can be found just above the horn on the wiring diagram.

Why not correct the connector on the harness side. That way if someone replaces the instruments/controls (and their associated wiring), then they will connect properly without having to "adapt" the replacement instrument/controls connector to the incorrect harness. It's just as easy to rearrange the connectors on either side (male or female) of a multi-connector plug.  ;)

After trying and failing to reach the barb on the loom side, I had no problem getting to the barb on the controls side.  If anyone can tell me how to get to the barb on the loom side, I will switch everything to the stock configuration. In the meantime this will not affect wear or cause other issues, so I'm not worried about it.

The barb on the female multi connector blocks is typically more difficult than the male spade multi connector block. The process is similar, it helps to see one taken apart to get an idea how they are held together.
