with a strobe, if timing is advanced* then the indicator tab should appear on which side of the T mark?
* that is, SET to be advanced - as in rotating the points plate.
NOT advanced by upping the revs and having the advancer mechanism do it's thing.

With the timing advanced, a strobe light will show the indicator to the right of the F mark, if the T mark is visible with a strobe then the timing is retarded...... Important note; this would only apply at idle r.p.m. as engine speed above about 1,100 r.p.m. will already turn the advancer mechanism
