Should be fine if it drips on it.

X2

Any drips or splashes won't hurt it. Just wipe it clean once you're done filling.

A coat of unbuffed wax, like Turtle wax or such is a good idea also to add a little extra protection.

I have been told that white vinegar is great for tanks.  You need about 5 gallons and about a week worth of time. Fill the tank and let sit for a week. Empty tank an then check you see the rust situation. If good dump a baking soda water mixture into the tank which neutralizes it.

If you want to get it done in an afternoon use the Works. Read up on drying it, flash rust, getting gas back in quickly, types of hole plugs  yada yada.

Good idea. White Vinegar WILL remove paint!!!

I use it to strip paint from carburetors. The wax idea is brilliant. They also make a coating for painting cars that does a good job of protecting the stuff you don't want damaged. It peels off when you are done.

If you get any vinegar on the paint, just wipe it off as soon as possible.  Ekpent's got it.  Vinegar will take at least 24 hours, much longer depending on the amount of rust.  The Works can be done in an afternoon...
If it works good, it looks good...

Best stuff I've used and safe on paint is metal rescue.

I've also used that three times on different tanks. Works well, but it's a little expensive. I lucked out when I ordered 2 gallons for my CB125...Amazon sent me 6 gallons by mistake!

It is safe on paint but be careful with red paint. A lot of reds are made with iron oxide as a pigment. So in that case, it will fade it.

My view is , if its no part of, or  not a product thats used on paint , don't put it on paint... ;)
