Source for 650 engine parts?
« on: November 23, 2014, 07:59:57 AM »
Hi all-

I am currently in the process of putting together a 550/650 hybrid engine (like the Paulages build) and would like to source new cam and primary chain tensioners- these are NLA from Honda, and I'm not finding anything online (DSS, ebay, etc) for any NOS parts.

So, who knows where to find these or has a set to sell? :D

Maybe a secondary question given the unavailability of new parts- I'm wanting to replace these because they're cracking (and they're 30 years old), but they otherwise seem to function fine.  I rebuild a lot of 750's, and these parts are just sort of mandatory on a rebuild.  Seems like maybe I could get away with running these, the back of the hyvo chain is probably pretty easy on the tensioner, but I want to do it right the first time.  Any thoughts on the perils of used cam and primary tensioners are also appreciated.

I'll start with the easy one first. I have never seen, or heard of a primary chain tensioner failure. As long as the tensioner is not damaged beyond normal minor wear. There should be no reason why it can not be reused.

The cam chain tensioner, and guide are another story. These get damaged when the cam chain is not kept properly adjusted, or by incorrect installation during engine work. I have looked far, and wide for replacements to only find used pieces on ebay. Those are a crap shoot because the sellers rarely ever give good photos to be able determine the condition of the surfaces. Used pieces that do not show damage or discoloration on the guide surfaces should be reuseable.
