Hey,

I'm about to strip and paint the tank of my 1971 cb500 and I am looking for inspiration. You guys do great work. I'd love to see any member custom paint jobs! So far here are my google favorites:

The paint job must match the style of the bike.
I'm sure you will get ideas with pgotos of how your bike look like or what you plan. If it is original style with minimum of changes, probably most people want OEM style paint and striping.

It's different today compared with 30-40 years ago when it was a must to change from OEM.

i have made this low kost..weekend job rattel can paint..never used it..got a patina tank from e bay. DE... germany..but fun to try

Wholeheartedly agree. What I'm looking for, I think, is custom colors with oem design. So, for my 500 - I'd have the same "teardrop" design on the sides but with custom colors. Like the last two bikes in my original post (the yellow and silver with black). That said:

Scott S this is just beautiful. Is that the 750K paint on your 500? Looks great on the smaller bike....

It is a Toyota silver that I picked out of a book at the paint store. I was certainly inspired by the Japan market CB750 paint scheme!
The stripes are CB450 Super Sport stripes. I had to trim a little off the front to make them match the curve of the tank properly.

That bike is now sold and lives in California.

Details on the flake application. Did you use a flake gun or gravity?

Base color black, mix flakes with clear and apply. Then apply just clear. I used a gravity HVLP regular spray gun. Kept mixing the flake/clear to keep them suspended while spraying.

pretty close to the other. Black base, HOK apricot flake in clear, decal, plain clear.

old photo - ended up with a black fender. That bar was a cheap bar I found at a local shop. Almost like a low motocross bend. I loved it.

I've done a few flake paint jobs and it works best if you spray the flake in a clear basecoat and not clear as the basecoat will be less likely to run on you.

A long time ago....when the lacquer clear we used was all that was used with flake, I was taught to take a clean, straight sided glass jar and roll the flake after the first application to put the 'points' flat. That way it didn't take 20 coats to cover and runs weren't the result of puddles in the flake valleys

In the spirit of the season I am going to share my super tip for flake and candy paint jobs.

Normally to do a candy you would lay down a silver or gold base or maybe even black then apply the flake using an inter base clear. What I found is that if you use the old style siphon sprayer with a couple marbles in there you can add the flake directly to the base coat. Note: got to use good quality products.

I have had great success adding a few heaping tablespoons of Roth baby flake to a silver base coat and spraying at high pressure above 50 psi. It does a nice job of helping the tiny flake to stand up on end and give maximum sparkle.

This look great and lets you go straight to candy. I like it because it is faster, and keeps the paint from getting too soft.

I agree, the old siphon gun is the best way to do it and use a large nozzle, but I usually spray color flake over a similar base color as it will give you a more uniform finish. I usually spray large flake, but I also add smaller flake of the same color to help fill. I have sprayed color flake over a black base with a 50% coverage which gives a different look to the finish. Gravity guns usually plug when spraying flake.

Has anybody ever installed one of these triumph tank racks on a cb tank? Looks like I would just need to drill four holes and seal it somehow....

Thinking of installing one of these (a few on eBay) after I'm finished painting.

But perhaps not....

the fuel cap are in the area..so it dont fit...its easy to brass some thredeen nuts in the tank to schrev into...so mounting it are not a problem
