K0 Swingarm bushing question...
« on: September 02, 2015, 11:38:01 AM »
Alright folks so I am starting to tinker with the 1970 K0 that I found and have it mostly stripped down and started to clean parts to slowly reassemble. Starting with the frame and working my way up the intent is to put on tapered roller bearings in the neck, new wheel bearings, new stainless steel spokes, and bronze swing arm bushings which leads to my question...

When I look on line the bronze bushings have a neck. When I look in my service manual at the rear fork chain case diagram, the bushing (#8) does not have a neck but (#9) the rear fork pivot thrust bearing does...  Does the bronze replacement bushing replace both of these items? Actually all 3 of the items 8,9, and 13 in the diagram...

Thanks in advance, Blake
Cheers,  Blake

Posting a pic of the manual you are referring to makes it easier to respond, and posting a pic of your K0 always adds interest  :)

The early bikes like yours came with the straight through plain swingarm bushings, the later bikes with what's called a "top hat" bushing around here. You will be pushed to find the original style bushing online, all you see is the top hat style. It will work, and most here seem to prefer it; I see it more as a cost saving item from Honda's side. And yes, the top hat style does make the felt washer and the thrust washer redundant.

BTW, Lucky is kind of a loaded name around here  :)

Henning, thank you for the response and letting me know the top hat style bushing would be fine to use.  I am still figuring out the photo thing and will get some uploaded soon.  The diagram in question was out of an old Clymers that I found at a used book store. I have that and a Chiltons that I think is almost as old as the bike itself... The diagram was the same as one I found in the manuals available on line here on this site also...

Also I will get some pictures of the bike up soon too when I figure it out. The Lucky K0 moniker came from how I found the bike.  It was leaning on the carport by a house in my sister in laws neighborhood, a house that they thought was abandoned.  After checking out the bike I beat on the door until it was answered by the guy that bought it new.  Talked for a little bit and bought the bike for what I thought was a good price and my wife thought was about $250 too high (I paid $300 for it.)  After looking at some of the hi end restorations on here, I know that is not what I plan to do.  My plan is to get it running safely and enjoy the heck out of it! I am sure there will be more questions to follow as I start cleaning more bits and pieces and prepping for reassembly.

Thanks again, Blake
