Fork Rebuild: Part Cracked
« on: November 27, 2014, 12:00:21 PM »
I am in the process of rebuilding my front forks and I came across this:

This doesn't look right but doesn't look to really affect the principle of the fork's process and should continue to work.

Any thoughts?

Can you wipe it off and shoot another picture for us?

That's the top of your damper rod, and I have never seen so much as a nick on one before myself. That is bizarre.

If it broke into chunks it could certainly jam up the telescopic action of your fork, obviously a bad thing. You might get away with welding it up, replacing that oil control ring in the groove, and ride on but I'd imagine you could find a junk fork with a nicked up tube that nobody wants, buy it, and find and a pristine damper rod within if you look around.

Chris,

On the inside of your forks lowers what is the number?  It should say 341.  300 and blank are for 72 and older.  If you verify that for us betcha member has that part.

Ya, I linked a 400f part for example - bad form. Deleted my post. Buy the damper rod for sure, that's the best idea.
