Cam Shaft/Sprocket installation
« on: November 29, 2014, 08:45:40 AM »
I'm nearing the end of a top end rebuild and I'm having a difficult time getting my cam chain back onto the cam sprocket. It keeps getting jammed and I lose the wiggle room. Any tips?

The bike in question is a '76 CB550.

pry the camchain tensioner backwards and lock it there.

I don't know how to explain better.  Basically begin installing cam chain on the sprocket from Exhaust side, and finish in the intake side..  Seems to me that if you try it by starting
On intake side you can't get the clearance you need as the side of the tunnel gets in the way.  Hope that make some sense.  I seem to recall it would almost just flop in to place if I started on ex side but if
I tried from intake side the cam chain just would never be able to get on the sprocket.

PS.  Just noticed you have 550, my experience is on the 750, but you might find a similar approach.  Guess I wanted to reply because I remember feeling quite frustrating until I recognized one direction worked easily while the opposite felt impossible.
