I'm slowly restoring my little,Rusty,Weathered 81' CB125S and I've run into a problem.I used a mix of Wintergreen oil & water heated up to soften some rubber parts(gas cap lid molding, gas cap seal, air filter housing, side cover & taillight grommets...)and didn't allow for the correct ratio or amount of heat to lightly soften them on a stove and I've ruined them:they came out like Huge rubbery, gummy stuff  :o  ::) ::)  Man !  :-[  I'm in the middle of doing my tank w/ vinegar also and hoped that I'd be able to seal up the fuel cap so I could shake it up well to get out all the rust.. Bummer.  I Need some rubber parts.
I don't have a M/C salvage yard anywhere near me and there's nothing on Ebay for it right now.The other thing is that only about half of the rubber bits are still avail. but over here where I live I would need to take a ride out 20+ miles to go to a Honda dealer(there's not many Honda dealers around this area, 'Harleys Rule'  ::) )who has negative energy anyway & online is going to take time also
I'd sure like to find someone who's parting a CB125S from 76'-82' (Honda parts code '383')or possibly has saved a few rubber parts from a previous build?
Do any of you fellow members here know of a used bike around that's been 'picked at' for parts that might still have some of these rubber bits ? or a nice salvage yard ?  I just refinished the entire frame(it's all in my apt.) and want to put the bike together now.  ::)  :-\

The main ones are: the gas cap seal(or a complete gas cap),the gas cap lid rubber molding, and lots of taillight, airbox & front headlight mount rubber grommets.
I just think parts of a used one makes more sense to me at this point because I could possibly get them sooner rather than having to search for half of them that're NLA from Honda. I appreciate any help you've got

I've never tried heat or wintergreen - I use plain ol' xylene from the hardware store (way cheeper).
It does cause swelling, similar to what you're seeing - but the swelling reduces in a few days, while the rubber remains flexible for a while.
So take heart - wait a few days and see if they don't shrink back.

I've also used regular diesel fuel to do the same thing, it's just nastier and I don't like the way it smells.
I'm old, I can be like that.......

I'm also looking for a fuel tank cap that's good and just found out it's the exact same cap on a 1980 Honda CM400T or CM400A twin;it has that chain thing on it that goes into the tank & the cap is under the lid.
You got one ?

I have that fuel cap for an '82 CM200 - don't know if it's the same part, though.
It has the chain thing, and resides under that goofy lid thing too.........

Hi Bill, thanks for the response.I checked the online parts fiche and I see it's a completely different part# The one I need will be #17620-388-671 or 17620-383-670,but if I had a way to match them up to my old cap by trying it on the tank...
The online fiche shows a pt.# for the 82' CB200T Twinstar but I didn't see a listing for a cap on motogrid.com for the earlier year Twinstars. The integrity of my cap is:it leaks from the internal seals

Email me directly, give me a mailing address.
I'll send you the one I have - not saying it doesn't have rust or even leak, but it's yours if you want it. Just because they're different part #'s doesn't mean it won't work - as long as the hole is the same diameter, that's hopeful.
I never used it, I got rid of the tank "lid" completely, filled in the indent, finished it off with a simple chrome twist-on gas cap. Looks way better, to me at least, I hate those lid-things.

As for all your rubber parts, you're on your own there. Like I mentioned, everything I ever treated with xylene or diesel regained its former size after a while - maybe it will take a long time with your stuff.

Lol on that last part  ;D  :D Man you should see the size of my fuel cap gasket, the orig. one would now be able to fit into the center hole of this large 'donut'  :o  :-[ :-
I guess next time I'll just put'em in a little 'cool diesel'  ::)

I'll PM you and send you a mailing address THANKS  8) I've seen pics of your bike before on 'the twins' and it Does look good w/o the lid.

Got your email - I'll post the part on Monday.

You haven't seen this bike, it's one I got to flip.
The red bike you saw is a '75 CB200....

Uh oh, looks like I spoke in haste.
I just searched the shop, can't find that gas cap - found the goofy lid-thing, but not the cap.
Sorry about that.
For what it's worth, I found the simple chrome twist-on replacement cap at an auto part store, cheap...........

Not really, it was the local Auto Zone joint, down the road from my house.
I just measured the tank opening and looked for something the same size.
A little finaglin' and it worked great..........

I hope you remember the manufacturer Bill or the part# otherwise if you lose it that might be tough to find a replacement;what'd you mean when you say "finaglin" ? mods to your tank ?

No biggie, just bent the hold-down tabs on the cap a touch.
I kept no record of the part # or anything - mostly these things are all pretty much the same diameter..........as I recall it only cost about $5 or so.
I don't get too concerned about it - as long as it vents the tank, keeps gas from splashing out, and is shiny, I stop worrying about it........
