I had a combat metal lunch box just like this that I carried to school back in the mid 60's. I bet my mom still has this thing stashed away somewhere.

I had a Star Trek lunch box. Just for kicks I auctioned it on ebay years ago and even in it's beat up shape and missing thermos it still got around $120. :o My mom saved some of my childhood stuff and gave them back to me one year which is the only reason i still had it. Auctioned my Hot Wheels lunch box too  at the same time, didn't get near as much for it as I did the star trek box but still got around $50 for it. I was stunned especially with the start trek box that collectors valued them so much but i wasn't complaining.

Can you imagine a youngster turning up at school with one of these nowadays ? There would be mass panic.

Went home for lunch every day.  Lived just 2 blocks from school until Junior high, and there was a cafeteria.  Just $2.60 got you a lunch ticket with 5 punches on it.  :)

I had a number of those metal lunch boxes with the thermos bottles that you'd always break when you dropped the box.  ::) Damned if I can remember what any of the themes on them were though!  ::) Gilligans Island was one maybe and possibly a Scooby Doo(??) among others...

If we knew there was such a thing as a lunch box we would have dreamed of having one.
It was brown paper bags for us with our sangers wrapped in waxed paper. We did have scholar boxes, anyone remember those? And blotters and slope cards (not what you vets might think). Jeez, even had a slate and slate pencil at one time.

My first lunch box was the plaid one mentioned earlier here. Then my grandfather got a new black barrel topped lunch box and gave me his old one, by the time I got to middle school life  had changed, no more lunch boxes cause there wasn't any lunch stuff at home. I stole my lunch from the cafeteria all the way through high school.
I go to restaurants everyday for lunch now, but I always pay and leave a good tip. Life changed for the better. I didn't keep grandfather's lunchbox, but I wish I did.

So obscure even I can barely remember it. A quick look on Ebay, and there it was. Like a lot of things, this reveals our ages.

I got my first lunch box for the start of the third grade; a Yogi Bear/ Huckleberry Hound job.
I recall that my mom was extremely pissed off when she found the broken thermos bottle after the first day. :o

Scottly, Did you grow up in the 60's? We only had the glass thermos then, broke a bunch of those myself. It was a relief when the plastic ones came out...the soup might have tasted a little funny but at least you had a shot at  some soup and a dry sandwich.

Haha, broke a few glass ones myself, went to stainless steel ones, they don't stay hot as long but they don't break either... ;D
