Just bought a real gem of a barn find!
« on: December 10, 2014, 06:10:50 AM »
I think I just made a great purchase.  I am going to need some help affirming the low miles are correct from some of you 750 guru's.  Okay here is what I bought a 9/70 candy gold K1 750 with 676 miles.  All there including a beautiful set of 300's and tires.  I do have some concerns about the mileage first the tank and side covers are not as nice as ones I've had with 30,000 miles and someone at some point touched up the frame paint on the right side of the swing arm and right rear part of the frame makes no sense to me.  Here is what looks correct the aluminum cases on the motor are near perfect and still have the clear coat on them even the rear wheel hub is perfect.  also all the chrome is near perfect and the sprockets and chain are like brand new with very little oil on them.  And the bike wears an original set of dunlop gold seal super speed tires they have good tread but I would have expected more on them with under 700 miles.  The wiring is very clean with all the connectors very clean.  The points plate is another area that looks real clean and original but its not TEC i will post pictures of it later it looks to be denso.  It also has the original brand head light.  I am going to work on betting her running today and post a lot of picture later.   I found the bike on the Philadelphia craigs list yesterday.

Sure sounds like a major score. One would think with that mileage that the linage should not be too far from the original owner. Did you get any history on it when you purchased ?

It's a great find!  I'm not an expert on whether those are the original tires, or if the mileage is true, but it's a great bike nevertheless.  The frame touchup could be from battery acid overflow damage.

The guy I purchased the bike from bought a property in upstate ny. and this bike was in the barn.  The guy who owned the bike passed away and his wife new little about it it didn't have a title only registration from 1975 so the guy I bought the bike from applied for a one.  I was just out looking the bike over real good and here is what I believe.  Is the bike really a 700 mile surviver? Maybe although there has been work to get the bike running again and some point and by the looks of the carb bowl it was at least 20 years ago or more(they're real bad).  I believe the person who attempted to get the bike running replaced the floats in the carbs possibly the jets too the battery and what looks like the points and points plate(looks old but not original correct me if I am wrong on this).  This bike isn't a museum by any means although the wiring chrome and rubber parts all seem to look new and unmolested and I know that speedometers can be replaced very easily but the tires tell the story of low mileage.  Its just too rough in my opinion to say for sure if the bike is a true low milage surviver or not.  Or someone 20 plus years ago trying to put a classic back on the road with more availability to original parts.  I will post more pics and info on the bike when I figure out more.  Input  positive or negative is appreciated.

So the carb floats are black plastic rather than the stock brass ? If you pop off the counter shaft sprocket cover I would assume if its that low of mileage there should be virtually no chain oil build up, may provide a clue. Does it still have the tool kit and owners manual ?  Wear on the footpeg and shifter rubber can be clues also.

In looking at the tach one sign of a low mileage bike is the red zone would not be faded and the lenses clear like yours. Of course, the tach could have been changed but no reason to do that. Another good sign is the top of the tank does not look faded. Real common on this OEM paint from back in the day. So I take it you can kick it over and she is not froze? Hard to believe a bike in the barn all those years has free pistons.

That is one gorgeous find in Upstate NY none the less.  Amazing.  That should sell for 10 to 12k all day long on Ebay.  A true barn fine.  You must have been first in line and did your drive all the way up from Scranton PA to get her?  Where in Upstate NY?  I am sure I will be happy for you after I get over my initial jealous.  Congrats you deserve it.

There is almost no oil build up around the front sprocket or rear sprocket and look how clean the little bit of grease is around the rear wheel bearing.  Yes the cylinders are free.  I cleaned the carburetors all out they were a mess but I got them all clean and the rack put back on now all I need to do is change the oil check the valves and check the gap on the points and the timing and she should come to life.  I am curious to see how a low mileage 750 runs I haven't owned one that had under 10,000.

When I got my 73 500k it had 1243 orig miles, the great thing is it hadn't been hacked, butchered, disassembled and put back together wrong, so I could see how the factory assembled the bike.
Personally I would get it running and ride it, maybe down the road restore it. There is a lot to be said for an original non restored running vehicle.
thanks, Mark

First off, to the OP, grats on the bike. BUT.........

That should sell for 10 to 12k all day long on Ebay.
wow, your kidding right? thats ridiculous.

I personally cant see any 70's mass produced bike pulling that kind of money, EVER, EVER. No matter what it is, or how low the miles are. That just blows my mind, and not to insult anyone, but if you paid that much, you should be put into a mental institution.  :o

That bike to me is worth $1k tops lol, you vintage honda guys are nuts lol, but to each there own, if owning and riding something like that makes u happy, thats all that matters tho isnt it!?

nice find-put some miles on it!

SOHC - 1k tops? Do know the history of the cb750 ? Or maybe that was a joke. Funny thing people use to say things about VW's back in the day and look what kinda coin a barely running bus brings nowaday. Old stuff is cool period. The public sets the market on how much cool is worth. I love it when people under value antiquity and history for whatever reasons. More deals for me :-)

I am also calling dibs on all upstate NY cherry mint cb750s in the future.  Man I must have been sleeping at the wheel.  Can just hear Steve-O laughing his ass off now!  Think I need counseling to get over missing out on this deal.

I sure would like to know the price as well, but not if it is too low.
