sprocket upgrade
« on: December 21, 2014, 12:56:51 PM »
I have had to replace the rear wheel on my 1976 550F, and thought it would be a good time for a rear
sprocket upgrade.  I have looked all over for a 41 tooth sprocket for this bike and have come up empty. My question is,can I
use say the 41 tooth sprocket from a 750 of a similar year (75/76/77)? Or point me in the right direction on locating
one that will work?

that will gear you way down!1st gear will become like a four wheel drive in lo range, itll be like your missing 5th gear once in top,i think they got the standard gearing spot on?i tried a 37 on a cb500 that have 34 stock, thats how it became I took it straight off, your going even and extra tooth, the 500s have 17x34 stock and the 550s have 17x37,they have a different internal primary reduction but have the same overall gearing.

i converted mine to 520.  A bit less weight. Plenty of strength.

This it?

http://www.amazon.com/JT-Sprockets-JTR1493-41-SPROCKET-530-41/dp/B00CQKA39A

That sprocket will not work on the 550F. It is for a Kawi ZX\ZZ 06-later. Different mounting.

The design of the 550 hub will make it difficult to find anything other than a custom sprocket once you go past the stock 37 tooth.

Do not put the bike in gear until you bolt on the retainer clip correctly.  Then go to JT sprockets and get one for your yr and model 550.   I believe you can order a 35 to a 40 tooth.  As Dave said, unless you're racing 60ft, don't get a 41.  Way to buzzy.
