Tin Whiskers...and reliability of electronics for motorcycles.
« on: December 13, 2014, 07:47:56 PM »
I read about this on Practical. Machinist. , but I did not explore the link describing the initial. Article. But what I got out of the posts following. Was this..keep in mind..I may be incorrect.

The basic premise I gleaned from this was that lead solder got mostly banned..although it may be allowed for avionics, as it appears to be more reliable
The newer type solder the powers that be forced most industry to use, seems to have caused some reliability issues.

Which brought me to the thought that perhaps in some way it could cause problems on newer stuff made for bikes....
And made me wonder.. Is lead solder readily available if needed. Sounds more reliable..

Just throwing it out there for folks to consider, it may affect us..

I have a big box full of old different types of old lead solder reels that I find at yard sales and house clean outs I do etc. Am I a hoarder of all things old ??  :)
I think Frank what you are alluding to is the new things that are made possibly ?  Is good ole' solder and flux becoming a banned substance nowadays ?  Would not surprise me.

I think you can still get lead solder, I think it is getting harder to find and get made.
Still have a decent roll of 60/40 Kester electronic lead solder I use for my tube projects.
