Love the opening text:

"Front brakes are getting to be like helmets. Increasingly, the law requires them"

Now that IS period.

At first glance I thought the box in the middle containing the disc was a record player (with the brake lever being the stylus arm)!! LOL ;D

You know you're right about the tank I hadn't thought about it before but it is more Cafe'ish than some of the others. Perhaps thats why I likeit so much! I like the cafe style - mind you people seem to turn the 400-4's tank into a cafe style quite easily and that's a completely different shape. Have you seen Andy Harrisons 400-4 cafe- it's gorgeous.

loony - I just read the profile and the pics of your 350 - really a nice looking machine.  ;)  My CB500 also has the two types of blinker mounts [headlight bucket swivel versus ear mount]. Do you know which is proper??? Mine is presently mounted on the headlight bucket swivels, but that does seem a clumsy place to put them...   :P

Hmmm...I'll have to check Mr Bunny's 500 road test...lemme see here...Ah! The pic shows the 71 blinkers on the bucket swivel...but the pic doesn't seem to show the ear mounts at all...???...

(Edit: Just checked the Honda Fiche for 73 - it does not show the ears w/holes, or the "plug" bolts in the holes either...)

BTW: I was able to find & buy all 4 CB500 exhausts here in the US...Expensive, but I wanted the original look...and these seem to be newly made, as they have a rather amusing message stamped into them concerning the noise level being louder than presently mandated levels...   ;D

Well I think that my blinkers (indicators to us Brits) were originally on the ear mounts as I can see where they were taken off (to put a screen on). Also the road test and other pics show them on the ear mounts - so that's probably the correct position - at least for the 350.

Bet those exhausts sound nice!! :P ;D

The indicators on my 500 are on the headlamp bucket swivel... (pic here: 500/4 )

Those exhausts are modern examples (still made by Honda I understand) you can tell by the notice!  David Silver sells them for £75 each + VAT + shipping (that's about $750US at current rates)

My exhausts were put on by the PO  8)

Heh...My bad...We Yanks call them "turn signals", but "blinkers" sounded more British-ish...   ::)

Here's a comparison of CB500/550 exhaust prices from two different online sites, per their Fiche...

1973 CB500K2

RideNow

04     MUFFLER 1, EX. 18300-374-707    001    $174.07
07     MUFFLER 2, EX. 18350-374-707    001    $172.42
08     MUFFLER 3, EX. 18400-374-707    001    $137.35
11     MUFFLER 4, EX. 18450-374-707    001    $128.32
               Total   $612.16

MR Cycles

04     MUFFLER 1, EX. 18300-374-707    001    $162.46
07     MUFFLER 2, EX. 18350-374-707    001    $160.93
08     MUFFLER 3, EX. 18400-374-707    001    $128.19
11     MUFFLER 4, EX. 18450-374-707    001    $126.42
               Total   $578.00

I couldn't find a Fiche listing for a 350 Four in 1973, but there is a 74 listing -

1974 CB350F1

04     MUFFLER 1, EX. 18300-333-617    001    $195.29
06     MUFFLER 2, EX. 18400-333-617    001    $229.43
10     MUFFLER 3, EX. 18500-333-610    001    $193.01
11     MUFFLER 4, EX. 18600-333-610    001    $201.08
               Total   $818.81

Quite interesting...but for the life of me, I can't figure out why the individual pipes [1 through 4] don't all cost the same...   ??? ::) >:(

Just to say I love your name Burmashave... Saw Fastest indian again the other night. Brilliant movie.... BURMASHAVE!!! ;D

Doesn't bring back memories for me (as I'm a 76 model and therefore a bit to young for the originals) but I love looking at these old articles it's fascinating stuff! A little bit of history....

History???   >:(  It's like yesterday...  ;D

The BurmaShave signs were just being phased out as I was growing up...along with the Mail Pouch barn paintings...   :D

Moto-Bunny - have you noticed any interesting ads in the mags you're scanning??? Like that girl with the brake rotors??? IIRC, there were a lot of ads back then that were "politically incorrect", as they say now...   ::)

I have an old Petersens "Motorcycle Sport Book" from 1966...great stuff!!! Anyone remember when Greeves was king of off-road???   ;D

Also one from 1968...the 450 was the biggest Honda you could get...   :D

Thanks!  I haven't seen Fastest Indian, yet, but I want to soon.  They had phased out the signs before my time, but I think they were brilliant.  I also like the Tom Waits song of the same name.  There's something cool about the saying, "I'm on my way to Burma Shave" to mean you are headed out of town.

Here's a scan of the 1966 Honda 450...It looked a lot uglier in the flesh...

IIRC, they had a half-a-peanut gas tank back then...might just have been the home market...this looks like an export gas tank...

That's why the only CB450 I like is the 1968 model with the more traditional tank, but it hadn't gone all '70s style like the later versions.

thanks all.  .. ..  due to what I do for a living (selling automotive literature) I have access to, literally, a small warehouse full of vintage shop/service manuals, sales literature, magazines, etc.

I love the non-PC ads too - girls, girls, girs seemed to be the way to sell motorcycle stuff from about '66 to '73 or so (when you start seeing them mention 'women's lib' and the girlie pictures start to disappear.  . *doh*).

Norton ads are the best - every month, they had a new hottie blonde in their ads looking all sultry, showing off the latest incantation of the Commando. . . .lol.

Even though I'm a woman, I can dig these old ads.. . .dunno why anyone got all bent over them. Though, there should be at least the occasional ad with a hunky guy in it, too!    ::)    I love a lot of the outfits and hair styles from back in the day - definitely before my time but funny how a lot of the looks are all back in fashion, now.

Heres another one - not Honda related, but I thought it was kinda cute - I love her retro dress!

Us, too.  ;D

I was driving from work to my Honda dealer a couple weeks ago; a red cycle went by me at a pretty good clip...I caught up at a traffic signal; eyeballed the bike [Ducati] for a good 30 - 40 seconds before noticing that the rider, wearing a full helmet with ponytail sticking out and red leathers, had the name "Jenny" stitched across her butt...   :o ;D ;)  ...lol...  ::)

Had to look at that old west advert a couple of times before I bothered to read the copy, "...instant computer processed orders..."  Nice.

Hey Moto-Bunny, thanks, I've got the "Super 7" comparison sitting on my desk now.  It's a fairly serious comparison, and it reminds me of when I poured over bike mags trying to read between the lines in the reviews and comparisons.
