I'll be bending tubing soon,
« on: December 17, 2014, 09:35:42 PM »
A couple years ago I found an online blueprint for a hossfeld style tube bender. So I procured some 1/2" steel plate and got to work making one. I borrowed my buddies #1 machine to bend up my new #2. When my first die arrived and we started to bend some tube it was apparent the die didn't fit right. I was able to make it work with undersize pins and shortly after got the correct measurements. The print showed the holes 1 1/16" apart and the correct number is 1.1" I junked 8' of 2 1/2" x 1/2" plate and built a new one.  I got my dragster chassis back halfed and bent some tube for other projects.
Now we have a Funny Car roll cage to build so today I ordered an 1 5/8",  1 1/2" and a 1" die to go with my 1 1/4". I was surprised hossfeld doesn't stock the dies they make them to order.
 I'll get some pics tomorrow.

Don,
Do you think you start bending some steel tubing for M/C exhaust head pipes? I could use one..  ;)

I'm planning a couple test bends, some dies bend thinner tubing than others. We're bending .058 chrome moly first.

I am thinking they don't stock the dies, because they have a CNC or two that can machine them up quickly ...

That's true, they said it takes a week to make them. I wonder if they pour the castings too? I got the bill yesterday so I'm thinking they have been shipped. There is a stocking dealer in las Vegas but I just ordered from the factory, it's closer and I can wait.
I need to finish the front half job on the funny car before we do the new cage. They put a new camaro body on it and now the driver can't see over the cowl, we are raising the seat 4"
