« on: December 21, 2014, 07:30:52 AM »
I got a virgin cam 2100 miles for the 1978 CB750A and I'm going to have it coated for the new rebuild of my 78 drag bike...................

Hardweld! Sorry POPS, but I have my doubts about the effectiveness of coatings on cams. There's always a 2 cent opinion somewhere.  ;)

Did some reading pro's and con's about coating camshaft = I have a high speed buffer with cloth wheels and many rub on polish, so BUFFING I WILL GO and have my son in law take to his machine shop to test the R factor for smooth lobes and then do the rockers. I use oil with zinc as the oil they sold lately with out zinc wore out many cam lobes with low mileage. Thanks to big oil for screwing us again !!!!!!

Pops  what oil do you use?  I am looking for a good oil with zinc.  I use Amsoil in my newer bikes but not in the 750 because it was causing the starter clutch to slip.  Anyone had any luck with the zinc additives?

Sorry POPS, don't mean to hijack but only to show CBR954 what I found out about a Zn additive. Mike Rieck turned me on to this early on and I wanted to see for myself so sent used oil samples from two different race engines. Both use the same oil, my CB had a Zn additive and about 4 racing hours on the oil and, the FZR did not. The FZR only runs on two litres of oil and in this case had about 7 racing hours. The CB runs a mix of 50/50 leaded race fuel/pump gas (reason for increased lead levels), the FZR straight non lead pump gas. It shows me by the P and Zn levels that this additive works. No oil arguments, only my additive results. End of story.

Thanks for the info.  Definately dont want to start another oil war just looking what people are using for a zinc additive.  I know I have seen issues in car engines with flat tappets once the zinc left and want an additive for the cb's.  I have run Castrol GTX in the bikes for many years and never had an issue but with the new motors going together I want to make sure I have the right protection for the cams and rockers.  I am just curious to find out what the additive is that people are using.

The clutch will complain when cold and neutral not possible to find when warm. This will disappear with correct stuff inside the engine. All moving part surfaces will hopefully be happy too
No need of more information here since that stuff is covered by other fresh threads.

I used Red Line 20W-50 Motorcycle stuff last time, fully synthetic and loaded with heavy metal as the cam and clutch needs. Their website specify heavy doses.  Clutch issues almost sorted. Can drag some after days of not used. No leaks either yet. Will use same stuff next change. Only 1000km's so far.
