CB750 dohc behind bars
« on: December 20, 2014, 10:14:34 AM »
Driving by today in my truck and looked over to my right and saw what looked like a motorcycle inside the building. Did a u-turn and pulled in the parking lot. This business was closed but what looks likes about a 1980 CB750 dohc sits in jail. Can see it doesn't have factory pipes but looks pretty original other than that. Dang to bad I couldn't be lucky enough for  it to be a CB750 sohc because I would be calling somebody about it A.S.A.P!!

Nice condition, it seems? Around here, those sell for about $500, then spend about 1-2 years looking for someone willing the rebuild the carbs. Again.

Hondaman, just never been a big fan of the early dohc 750's. Earlier this year my neighbor had a 1979 CB750 dohc anniversary edition and in much nicer shape than the bike in this pic. But I just couldn't make myself pull the trigger on a dohc.

I couldn't abide the seating position, myself: it causes cramps on my inner thighs for some reason, much like on the Honda Rebel twin. (?) It was the nylon swingarm bushings in the early DOHC 750 that always kept me from even considering them, though. They went to needles later, which are OK until they wear out, after which there's no hope. :(

Nice paint, though!

Looks like it could be a great bike with a little TLC. Why not just replace the plastic bushings with needle roller bearings if that is a concern?
It should be an easy fix.

Is there anything more fun than riding? They are between your legs and are quiet when you turn them off.

If you can find some that fit correctly, it would work for a while, at least. I don't think there is ANY way to lube the bushings-bearings on that particular bike: at least I never saw any way on the 1979-1980 models that I remember. There were not zerks, bolt holes, nothing! The articles I remember reading about it mentioned disassembly and hand-lube as the 'fix', much like the old BSA twins. :(

With the needle-bearing kits, the hard part is in finding some that are properly made to fit the arms. I've removed a fair amount of them (or what was left of them) from the SOHC4 arms after the attempt was made to install them and failed. Either the needle cage was too large, causing it to crush during install, or too small, causing it to slide in and be quite loose after the "rebuild" was accomplished. So far, that's the only way I have seen the needle bearing kits in my own hands?

Perhaps I will run into one someday and find a real cure.   ;)

Here is a 81 I did several years ago. Like you HM the riding positing was not good but better after I reworked the seat. It did have good power. Before and after. Never mind the man standing behind the bike.

Neighbor had a DOHC 750F Super Sport model that I used to jump on and bomb around the local country roads around the house out here just for fun and it did feel faster than my SOHC counterparts.

I would certainly HOPE that you noticed 16 more HP and 10 or so pounds of torque.  ;)

Yep I noticed--they get a bad rap but run pretty good. Extra cam doesn't hurt.  From another Eric (great name by the way  :D )
