Wixom Questions
« on: December 22, 2014, 08:53:07 pm »
I did a search for "Wixom" and didnt find a ton of pics, Just wondering if someone had a few straight on pics, side pics, and any riding position pics that are fairly decent.

Also I have found a few places that sell the gigantic windshield, has any1 fabbed their own shorty? what did you use, any pics etc?
Did u heat form it? or just shape it flat? any help would be great.

It is a 109B, which im sure probably isnt a Honda specific, but i might make it work if i like how it looks. here is a pic.

The Wixom and the Bates handlebar fairings came and went pretty quickly in the mid-to-late 1970s. The 750 suffered a lot of wind effects against the handlebars from them. Many of the Bates versions ripped off their mounts in places like Colorado, Kansas, or Arizona in the fierce crosswinds that can be found in Interstate riding, and this news spread like wildfire back then. The frame-mounted fairings like Vetter and its knockoffs overtook the handlebar fairing market by about 1975, for the most part. I actually removed more of those in favor of a new Vetter than I did install Vetters on new bikes.

Today, if you go into one for the fun of it, a few things you may wish to do:
1. Install tapered steering head bearings and run them a little tighter than normal, for some damping assistance.
2. Install a steering damper, if you can.
3. Install HARD swingarm bushings, like bronze.
4. Make sure the wheel bearings are in top shape.
5. Make sure the chain and sprockets are smooth, no snatching. Tires must not have a flat spot on them, either.

While seemingly obscure, the little handling deficiencies caused by items 3, 4, and 5 above were the most common cause of speed wobbles with the handlebar fairings. Anything that tended to make the head "shake" was then amplifier by the not-steady mass of the fairing on the handlebars (they don't sit real still up there, but wobble around in the wind quite a bit).

;)

Thanks for the reply Hondaman, i added my hardtail build to the project section, and u will see hard swingarm bushings wont be needed  :o
I also have already purchased the Allballs Tapered bearings just because LOL, and i didnt know these batwings had wobble issues, i thought it was the larger lower fairings that were the issue with crashes etc. but thats no biggie, i will experiment, and im not even sure i will like the look to be honest.

All new wheel bearings are already sitting in my new parts box

A steering damper wouldnt be a bad idea anyways with my plans.

I do have a windjammer sitting around but damn they are ugly, and its a Kawi LOL

The wixom ranger 109B fairing is the correct fairing for the CB750. There never was one designed for the CB650. The bike came well after wixom was sold out to pacifico. In '77 pacifico changed over to the frame mounted fairing.

Here is one on the 650 site mounted to an 80 650.
http://www.hondacb650.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17

You can get a new windshield through Gustafssons plastics. http://www.bikescreen.com/search.asp?nobox=&scat=&stext=wixom&stype=&sprice=&pg=1
They have the shorty shield that you are looking for.

The fairing mounts to the pinch bolts on the upper tree, and a support on the bottom tree.
There were also fairing lowers, but the only application that I have found was for the early pan/shovel harleys.

I always thought the Wixom fiberglass to be superior to the Bates in these fairings: it didn't separate the mounts from the body like the Bates sometimes did. For around-town commuters, they sufficed OK, and were popular for that!

I put a Wixom on my 70 750 in 1970 before I started back to Alabama from San Diego and had no problems the whole trip. I liked it because I could put it on and take it off in just a few minutes. I still have it and the bike, I never get rid of anything.

I never have luck searching that site lol

It will be a last resort to buy a $130 windshield, which is double what i paid for the fairing itself. I had found that windshield before, and that why i was looking for a cheaper homemade solution lol.

The fairing mounts to the pinch bolts on the upper tree, and a support on the bottom tree.
There were also fairing lowers, but the only application that I have found was for the early pan/shovel harleys.

The fairing that caused a huge uproar from bikes getting thrown around in the wind went by a different name i think, it was similar to the dustbins, that covered a fair amount of the side and caused bikes to be blown off the road

I had a Wixom on my K1 750 back in the day and it worked great.  Commuted on it from home to college 60 miles away in some pretty fierce winds (I-10 in southern NM) and never had any issues.  Might have subjected it to some 100mph winds on occasion too without any problems.   ;)

Another vote for the Wixom Ranger.  I put mine on in the winter.  Last year did the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway and the BRP.  Got some pretty good winds with no problems.  1500 miles.

Glad to know people have used them with no problems.
I think things like Hondaman mentioned regarding the wobbles and such are from ppl with either poor, little, or 0 maintenance on the bike and/or the fairing, also not thread locking the bolts, and making sure you check them often.

The harley batwing owes its very exsistance to the wixom ranger fairing. The original harley batwings were designed, and built by wixom. Later to be brought in house by harley.

And an FYI. The openings for the turn signals on the wixom fairing are design to work with the fork ear mounted signals on the 550/750. I will be changing over to that style on mine using 550 ears to get rid of the signals sitting below the fairing. The double signals kills the looks of the fairing.

Thats good to know about the 550/750 signals, i had an idea to do a round orange LED light to fit in the openings, more of a custom deal.
