Building a bridge............. (between your legs!) More pics!
« on: October 07, 2006, 06:51:00 AM »
Well I couldn't find the other thread about steering dampers, but I mentioned the benefits of fork braces, and said I'd attempt to make one this weekend for CB750's.

Sean Condon needs one for his F3 "Beastie", and mainly because I didn't have any steel tube to do one for a K0-K8, I opted to make an alloy 3 piece brace instead.

This one isn't finished yet, but I'm pleased with how it's shaping up and thought I'd share how I'm spending my time, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Reminds me of the old joke -

Q - How do you make a fork brace?

A - Mill away everything that doesn't look like a fork brace.

nice work there terry.

I'm thinking of switching from the stock front fender to a plastic/glass one. would I need this type of brace if I did this?

BTW, How's my adapter coming?

cheers,

If you are running a single disc in the front then yes...you'll need one.

The factory "brace" is really just a fender bracket, but better than nothing at all, I guess. I shudder when I see bikes with no fender, and no brace either. Regardless of how many discs you have, as Mick says, a fork brace will stop the fork legs from "walking".

I've got one on my Suzuki GS1000S, which is probably the best handling Jap bike from the 1970's anyway, so no big difference when just tooling around, but it does feel a little more "planted", particularly when pushed hard thru the twisties under brakes.

They were very popular with Kawasakis back in the day, for many years the words "Kawasaki" and "handling" were mutually exclusive. Cheers, Terry. ;D

They're not expensive mate, they're only an "entry level" mill/drill, under $2K here in Oz when I bought it, it's the tooling that costs the big bucks. I really want a bigger gear driven mill with auto feed, my arms are just about falling off from turning those wheels, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I hope there are a couple of pics of brace I'm making to fit Suzuki forks in a Yamaha. Suzuki have had a bolt down brace from 1985 until abou 2003.
It also has the brake unions connected to the sides instead of two lines or a crossover line.

Tez,
Beautiful work, and sure to out perform the original. I measured up the 'brace' on the 400, and it's a whopping 2.6mm thick.

Thanks for that mate, and you're right, it's not a brace, it's just a piece of tin to hang your fender off, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Sorry to interupt the fun but could I ask one of you to explain what the "brace" is for? Where does it go? What is the improved effect? I gather that it keeps the forks from "walking" but I don't know what that means either.

Thanks for the info.
Time is short!
